Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Is this how it works with notice/term/severance?

essentially the company gives you 2 weeks notice that you’re being laid off. They tell you about it on the notification date, and you have to leave that day, but your last day of employment is 2 weeks later. Your severance doesn’t begin until after the term date, so effectively your severance is 2 weeks longer than what they tell you it is

@a2 Have you heard that there will be rifs for MN and DC? If so, what departments?

@ge If you had electronic deposits set up prior to your layoff, your last paycheck and severance check will be delivered the same way. You will receive a paper stub in the mail showing the breakdown of the deductions.

@ge unless you live in a state where they have to pay out all your PTO then they only pay out 40 hours.

@a3 I was laid off before Christmas. I had 80 hours vacation time. My severance just started Tuesday. I received a random deposit. It wasn’t enough to be my severance or my PTO. Do they send severance electronically or snail mail? Seems like only one week of pay but I’m not sure.

@OP Correct. You are not generally expected to work after your notification date, but if you're in a critical position or have projects to wrap up, you might still put in hours until your termination date 2 weeks later. But most managers don't expect it. Plus, if you have 40+ hours of PTO, you will get 40 of those hours paid out in your severance pay, giving you a 3rd week. I am a former Optum leader that RIF'd a few people over my tenure and was recently RIF'd.

Just a note, it takes awhile to get the severance check. It’s not the next paycheck cycle after your last day of work. I received mine almost a month after my last day. Some states have laws on when they need to pay out the severance but unless you’re willing to hire a lawyer, you end up just waiting. (Your last paycheck and any accrued PTO does get paid quickly/normally, as it’s separate from the severance check.)

@ay I was RIF'd in November and my paperwork was sent by my manager to my personal email address, which I provided during my notification call.

Just curious. Do they deliver severance paperwork electronically or is it snail mail only?

The WARN notice only applies to 50 people at one specific work address. Mass layoffs happened every few weeks in 2025 without tirggering WARN notices. If you get notice of a RIF your last day would be in 2 weeks (unless for some reason you are required to stop working immediately). Severance is after the 2 week period.

@a2 My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that there are ways to get around reporting to WARN and UHG manages to do that. That huge layoff that happened in April wasn't on WARN and it was stated it didn't have to be for some reason.. I could be wrong.. Have a good day!!

Yes. If you were to get laid off today, your last day of employment would be 1/20. You’d have to leave today, but would get a regular paycheck for the next 2 weeks, and then your severance would kick in after that

If it is a small scale layoff, yeah.

If its large enough for WARN (50+) they will tell everyone they lost their job and that it will be in 60 days time. No WARN has been submitted in MN or DC so there will not be an excess of 50 people cut within 60 days from the major HQs.

I am not sure which OP you are referring too.

Depends on your business segment.
I know my org, you stop work and for the 2 remaining weeks.
