Worst way to spend maternity leave

Waiting to find out whether I’ll have a job to go back to weeks after a traumatic delivery… while still in FMLA/STD… AND a colicky newborn… so fun!

The way they’re doing this RIF is crueler than usual.

Dont forget VZ provides 12 weeks of full pay on FMLA and then 60% for another 18(or 16) weeks on STD. Doctors note is required on regular intervals.

Serious question. How is it crueler than usual other than the fact that is it larger than usual? While I can sympathize with you, try to forget about Vz while you are bonding with your baby. If you are impacted, you will be notified upon your return and your notice period will begin then. Unfortunately, there is no negotiating your severance or benefit period. Your total weeks paid/covered depends on your length of service.

@br no they have to either give you notice or pay in lieu of notice so you get your money, then severance, either way.

@bq would I get 60 days before off payroll upon my return or will they just lay me off immediately upon my return? I didn’t know they deferred notice if we were off.
I’m still on STD and have all my VPL left.

@a3 the categories of leave that will defer your notice are:

  1. VPL
  2. AMT (whatever that is)
  3. STD
  4. LTD (don’t ask me why they listed LTD, as these people are generally already off payroll - the two exceptions I can think of are A.) those who expect to come back to work after STD exhausts and company approves unpaid leave, or B.) the RIF rank/list was made long ahead of time with employee status current to THAT date, and LTD would simply indicate that they are ALREADY off payroll.

Being a Mom is way more important than working for Verizon. Hopefully you'll get thru this alright but if you don't there's certainly other work options you can pursue.

@OP
When my college kid calls me crying, I ask her first thing - how sleep deprived are you right now?

Sleep deprivation makes everything feel way worse. Try not to figure out how all future issues will be solved. For now just try to focus on how your baby and you can sleep relatively well.

World won’t change after a relatively good sleep but you will feel little stronger to handle whatever happens.

@bj I hope so, even a little more time through the holidays would help imo. Especially since my husband is in school right now. I’m wondering if they lay us off before coming into the office if we can negotiate severance a bit. I’m still having complications and need health insurance until they’re resolved.

I’m on maternity leave too; already went through STD and VPL, using some PTO days prior to state leave.

Would they wait to tell me of my layoff status until I’m back in office (regardless of how I’m taking those maternity days)?

As someone who’s currently 4 months pregnant, I feel this :/ Not looking forward to interviewing in person visibly pregnant OR interviewing remotely and having to decide whether or not to disclose my pregnancy to a new company.

They will wait until you officially come back to work before they notify you, then the off payroll date ect.. starts.
Good Luck and yes focus on the baby!

@a2 I’m so sorry for your loss. I wish there was more protection for women at this super important moment in life. Hopefully the universe opens a door if this one closes. I’m trying to be as present as possible. Lucky for him, I can’t sleep either right now!

@a1 All good advice, thanks! I had to take STD prior to delivery (3 weeks) because I was so sick, so my STD is ending and my VPL is coming up. Hoping maybe they’ll wait until I come back to lay me off so I have a little more time if I am impacted. Thinking about seeing if they’ll give me a little extra severance if I am as well (and/or health coverage) because while not illegal, laying off on FMLA is not a great optic. My husband is a Veteran who is back in school so a lay off would be hard to navigate right at this moment. But if it happens, we will make it work. I just wish I want worrying about this during this special time with my newborn.

Sorry :( truly mean that--- had a similar experience when I had a stillbirth baby but this was back when rifs were small and my boss then told me they'd find me a role....

I know its easier said than done, but just try to be present with your baby-- mine are teenagers now! it really does go by so fast-- and this is a "job" -- trust me I know this is an important job! and benefits etc-- but ultimately, decisions have already been made so worrying about something you can no longer control will just add to your stress (I know easier said than done)

But yeah its a lot! and I hope you aren't impacted-- and raising a baby with a possible career shift can be feel very overwhelming-- so Im not trying to downplay that stress but I hope that you can focus on your newborn, heal and not be impacted... until then--- Hopefully you and the baby are well and rest as much as you can. Either way--- regardless of what happens, you will need mental clarity and strength and you're going to show up that way cause your a mom and thats what we do! sending you positive healing vibes !

I understand completely more than you know , if you are still under std, try and see if your primary can extend for you if you require additional time off for recovery if you are still under fmla you can extend it and max out on std based on your state and that will delay your lay off date. That should give you some time to at least get more std. if you are not impacted take your VPL anyway. If your state also offers pfl that will also prolong your return to work date . It won’t increase your severance payout if you extend it but it will at least give you additional time to save. Hoping your baby has some relief from colic soon. If you haven’t already try swapping babies formula based on what your pediatrician may recommend if they suffer from reflux if your nursing try limiting dairy
