Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Anybody else panicking?

Layoffs aren’t stopping (I’m not just talking about Cisco, but literally everywhere), the available jobs are dwindling, and everything is starting to look like we’re going to he-l in a handbasket. Just the thought of losing my job right now is making me hyperventilate.

As with the Industrial Revolution, work skills took on new requirements. Workforce adjusted and we became a sting nation! Same is now happing with AI and the sooner you adjust the farther you will be to recovering. Answer: Blue Collar skills. For job security, focus on jobs that has grey hair blue collar employees .

@ef truth! left early this year for a better opportunity. some of my ex colleagues in SBG were juniors at best disguised as Managers, G11s, even Directors.

Most folks at Cisco are useless and would have zero chance of getting the same money elsewhere. That’s why so many are scared of LR cycles. If you had anything about you then you’d just get ahead of the curve and leave of your own accord but you can’t because you’re useless and have no marketable skills other than BS, grovelling and PPT.

And yet even after so much bloodletting, most tech companies, particularly Cisco, are still riddled with overcapacity and underperformance.

Our industry is nowhere near the finish line on this. Companies are just doing it slowly over time to minimize disruption and let the layoff iterations identify those who should stay or go with each round.

This is all in the context of a up tech market. Things will accelerate in a down market. Most tech companies will probably return to where they were around 2010....low headcount, more high performers, cautious hiring.

Our industry really blew it during Covid. There was no way that mass of humanity was every going to persist in this industry long term.

Got impacted back in August and was fortunate to find another role before actual exit in October, although one paying less TC. Just wanted to say there is life after Cisco. Don’t get discouraged by all of the job market negativity. It is true that there is crazy competition right now but there are openings. May have to wait until January- which if you are impacted in November you will be on payroll until anyways. Openings typically decline due to the holidays. Invest in learning like your life depends on it (because it does!). I was spending 6 hours a day doing hands on training on Udemy which helped land me the next role.

Sorry OP, nothing you can really do but leave. LR is the best option, think of it that way. Managers are getting more harsh and soft skills are kinda going out the window. The Cisco environment is not how it was pre-covid…and is only getting worse. Su-ks that it’s also at the same time AI is taking over all the sectors

@OP It's very stressful out there yes. I was where you were back in August.

I've been out since mid-October, still looking but exploring other options for whatever I can do to bring funds in. Even looking at getting out of technology.

For what it's worth, try to remember to take a moment to breathe, and always be prepared. I get the anxious feelings too so I know it's easier said than done.

@a2 Taking a class doesn't equal "skills". Doing the actual work and knowing how we got to where we are, is required too. You sound like a young, recent graduate that thinks you know everything, but can't even log into a switch via a jumpserver.

I’m hoping to get laid off. Pay me for 6 months and let me move on.

If you have outdated skills you should. That is probably is your case. Most of all people I know in Cisco are outdated in any modern stack.
