Do I need to worry about layoffs? From what I’ve heard, it’s usually the people who’ve been here much longer. On top of that, my pay is so low it’s hard to imagine I’d be considered a big cost to cut.

@a2 The majority of management at VZ are afraid of their shadow and most will do nothing for anyone for fear that it may come back to them. I agree that at a decent company you manager will have your back, but do not count on it at VZ. All about me, me, me, me, and look what I did today. I completed coloring the new rebrand, what a joyful day.

If you are here less than a year, you are ok. For now.
It all depends. But let me put it this way, and if you are early in your career, here are my thoughts. Everyone is at risk. It doesn't matter who you are or what you do or how many critical projects you work on or even if the company truly would collapse without you. Get an emergency fund of at least 6 months and in these days at least a year to 18 months if you can.
The sooner you get this the more you can ride these things out with less emotional stress, which allows you to focus more on doing a good job that hopefully will help you not get riffed. Your direct management and that above you should be your advocates if you are a good worker and actually needed. I know people like to ball it up and spend on stupid stuff, but that emergency fund will bring you so much more sanity during times of volatility. This will not be the last time no matter what job you are working or at any stage of your life.
