Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

I was a Scrum Master back during me rugby days. Always enjoyed hoisting a pint or two with the lads after a match. Now if you’re telling me they’ll pay you to play, then you take that, less ye be a fool.

@a1 you say that like worrying about being laid off in any role at Fidelity isn't a thing

Agile is dead. It is dead at RIAs that actually deployed useful AI and it fast on its way out here. If you are technical and can code I would ask for a software engineering assignment. Next are the many product owner, engineers. The company overhired since it deployed agile and it is going to fix it like did google, amazon etc.

The bad scrum masters ruined it for the good scrum masters. Then again, Fidelity’s culture encourages bad scrum masters.

I know a guy in FI who went from being a software engineer to became a scrum master. When he was a software engineer, he wanted to do nothing all day. His goal was to simply get the “easiest path to management”. Now that he’s a scrum master, he always brags about doing nothing all day. Back when he was a dev, he used to make fun of me because I had to do a cr-p ton of work while he would “coast”. The guy always said the word “coast”. He simply wants the easiest route to management possible.

Before the connect weeks increased to half the month in office, he’d literally sit on the chair and put his feet up on the desk. Even his teammates noticed this arrogance.

If/when anybody gets laid off, hopefully it’s the ones that don’t contribute squat like him. People like him who ruin the reputation of the role are annoying. I hate seeing him in the office with that stupid smirk on his face, walking around like he owns the place.

I have personally seen what happens to a team when a good SM leaves.

Everything has fallen apart. The team isn't openly discussing issues anymore. And intentional planning seems sporadic - almost like managers frantically responding to an issue (that would've been discovered via retros etc).

While SMs may not do as much work. They have also served as crutches for bad managers. Removing SM will inevitably expose all the bad managers

The good - SMs do about 2 hours of work a day

The bad - Everyone knows SMs do about 2 hours of work a day

The ugly - Role being dissolved

As a current sm, honestly stay far far away from this role it’s a dead end and this job is not in a stable state right now. I also dont even think we’re hiring at all.

By June that role will be gone and so will most of the current scrum masters.

The role is on its way out.

I’d advise against leaving another role to take on a scrum master role.

Unless you don’t mind the constant threat of being laid off.
