Increased expenses

Has anyone thought about the increase of expenses with having all these people in the office? Everyone washing their hands and using the restrooms all day (I drink a lot of water and use the restroom at least seven times a day), using tons of toilet paper and paper towels, drinking lots of water, coffee and tea, keeping the building warm enough or cool enough for everyone in the office… needing more supplies like copy paper, pencils, pens, notebooks…. I’d imagine the water and sewage bills would increase significantly. Thoughts?

I'd like to see the execs try to run an earnings call from my desk--the lady two spots down from me never shuts up (i think she calls her daughter at college 4x a day) and i have to listen to the noise pollution from no less than 2 other consecutive Zoom calls on the floor. Half the time it is the same two folks on the same call so i get bombarded with an echo of the same call content repeating irritatingly.

Good that you're looking for a remote job. Just concentrate your energy on things you can control (looking for a new job/streams of income) rather than things you can't control (whatever policy changes your current employer puts into place.) Don't worry about what other people are doing, or why they do this or that...you're drive yourself crazy and into even more ill health with that sort of mindset.

I know of people who are technically and legally considered to be disabled, who also hold down jobs. You can work P/T remotely while also collecting disability $ indefinitely. You could even be freelance/have your own business working from home while collecting disability $. Look into your options. Do some research.

@ac I work because I have to not because I want to. I can’t live on disability. I am looking for a remote job after this announcement. I wish more people would understand when you have health issues coming into the office. Five times a week can be extremely difficult. It’s not like I wanna work from home for fun.

You need to advocate for yourself. No one else is going to do it for you. So what if your boss hasn't said anything...bring your documentation and reasons for an exception to be made for you to HR directly. You don't need your boss's approval, if your doctor documents in writing that a commute would be detrimental to your health, so WFH makes more sense.

Don't just sit around waiting and hoping that someone will grant you this - insist on getting it, and if they don't give it to you, then either sue them, take some temporary disability time off (due to the mental stress it's causing you on top of your physical ailments) and use that time to get a different job.

You need to be proactive, weigh out your options, and make some moves.
Stagnating while vaguely hoping, as you stew in resentment and self-pity ain't gonna cut it.

@ad I have a multitude of health problems and I never needed to get approval because working three days in the office I was able to take care of what I needed to. The five day work week in the office is mandatory for everyone. There aren’t any exceptions. At least I was not told by my boss that there were exceptions. I am also a cancer survivor.

It's a power trip coming from the top. I don't think the CEO cares if extra money is wasted on utilities, water, rent, etc if it means that he can order everyone back into the office as a personal flex. It's just the way it goes.

If you are in such poor health that you rely on dialysis, why don't you just go on permanent disability? Or if you still need the salary, then at least pare down your work hours to something part time? Another option for you is to get a different job which is fulltime remote.

Working fulltime in office with a commute seems to be too much for you to be able to handle, so find something else which works better for you. I don't get the whole I'm so stuck due to one company's policy attitude. Yes it's a hassle to have to be job hunting now, but beetching about how awful the job is where you are now isn't going to help you get something better. Use your energy to find something else!

@aa well in my position I rarely have a conference call. Maybe once every three months if that. I actually work harder from home. I’m able to concentrate better and I don’t have people all around me on conference calls using their loud voice all day long. For me working from home is not for a luxury. I have legitimate reasons where doctors and dialysis clinics are close to me where I live and I can get there in time. Adding a significant commute every day of the week is going to put a strain on my health.

Rent on empty buildings is 1000x higher than these piddly wasteful costs. AC and heat on year around
And it is hard to have comrades and collaborators for success when you are sitting at your laptop in your underwear at home counting the minutes when the Teams meetings will finish so you can continue bingewatching Landman.
