Maurice Smith’s Profit

There’s a LinkedIn article circling around my department right now of the top 10 highest paid insurance CEOs of 2024. Good ole Maurice is #1, taking home more than 40 million dollars. Seems to me if he just took a measly pay cut of 10 million he could stop the layoffs and probably even onboard more people. The enemy of the working class is the billionaire, and we’re seeing the impact of that in real time.

@c9 how long have you worked at HCSC? Do you know anything about our operations and the amount of WASTE that goes on? Other insurance plans are bouncing back, we are the ones who are not. Funny thing is, HCSC touted how being non-profit would protect us from these things and “reinvest” back into our own company. We are losing large amounts of money for the first time in years due to ego driven business decisions and spending. And what do we have to show for it?

1) no AI infrastructure
2) we cannot even modernize our legacy platforms
3) high reliability on Vendors and Consultants without looking at our own staffing to upskill and grow. HCSC has or had so many intelligent people who were such a threat to leadership ego.
4) no strategy for how to defend our accounts for second blue bid
5) no strategy for second blue bid at all

Race has nothing to do with performance. His leadership CLEARLY has failed or these cuts and blogs of dissatisfaction would not be needed.
When you fail as a coach, leader or employee you get fired! Certainly don't get paid $40, 000, 000, did I miss a 0?
His email should of said I am cutting costs starting with me, then company waste,like Lear Jets, Limos, doughnuts, 2 hr lunches, etc. Loyal & dedicated employees that are NOT responsible for my poor decisions is why I am cutting my pay to $10,000,000 because I want NO one but me to pay for my failure, nor am I or anyone else to be paid $40,000,000 for not doing their job properly!

@b2 I’m not sure he’s to blame for our losses.. most insurance carriers losing money right now. If we pulled out of the markets we are losing money in, there would be more layoffs.

Maurice isn’t over paid. For the size of our company, and lack of stock options it’s really competitive. It’s a lot of money, but it’s like someone saying all of our claims processors should make what the offshore contracts make.

If we want competitive pay, we have to be okay with all levels receiving competitive pay.

Don’t hate the man for what he makes, nobody in these forums has ever declined a raise or bonus.

Is Maurice a DEI hire? a few years ago, when people were protesting HCSC and many other insurance companies, Pat and Paula had to go to Washington. The optics were bad. Many protesters were minorities and the CEO was white. A few years later, Maurice was hired.... the protests died down.

What qualifications does Maurice actually have to make his $$$$. From the rather short time hes here, hcsc has not been doing too well. Big mistakes have happened. Moral is down, etc.

in all honesty, I think the board wanted to hire someone black for the optics mostly. Am I wrong? what achievement has Maurice accomplished.

This is America, are you ashamed how much money you make? Tell your grandparents that you make $100,000 a year and you are upset because your company wants you to come to the office 3 or 4 days a week.

He's Black. Based on the DEI culture of this company, I wouldn't be surprised if he is saying, "Hey, I am black. Since my people suffered in the past, all of you must suffer, now." I mean, look. He's definitely in bed with Mayor Brandon Johnson. There's no denying he's using his race in justifying this.

Crazy that Maurice is making almost double the next top paid CEO. You’d have thought we were in a budget crisis with the amount of times I’ve heard we have no money for projects this year but this guy is raking in 40 million?!
