Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Silent Movement - "Black Tuesday"

Obviously, the past week has been stressful for many team members across HQ. Our personal futures and the futures of many of our friends and family are about to change and their is nothing we can do about it. I've been thinking about ways for Target team members to protest in a way that shows we are one team. We stand together because this layoff is going to hit home for each and everyone one of us. Tuesday is going to be about as sad as walking into a funeral. We will be saying goodbye to friends and colleagues we've known for years. As a silent movement I think it would be very impactful if everyone wore BLACK. While it isn't going to change the outcome of Tuesday's events it is a great way to come together one last time and shoe that we support one another. Thoughts? I would love to push this movement to social media ASAP. #blacktuesday

Love the sentiment of paying respect to friends and a place that you've spent a lot of time over the course of years. When it turns into "I'm mad at Target", what you're protesting against is the entire setup of public corporations in the U.S. You work at-will (no contracts), and the company ALWAYS answers to Wall Street before it's employees. The CEO answers to the Board, and the Board's job is literally to protect and increase shareholder value. That's it! There's nothing in the Board's job about taking care of workers, except to the extent that would help the stock price. There is nothing uniquely good or evil about the Target board or Brian. What you're feeling, is the same thing that gave rise to Occupy Wall Street. If you don't like how Target is handling this layoff process, your objection goes way, way above Brian Cornell and this one little corporation. And maybe that's something to think about before taking the next job at Wells Fargo, US Bank, Best Buy or Amazon?

If I were one of those cute Merch Girls that everyone talks about (I know nothing about them, I'm back-office out at TNC but will still lose my job) I would show up on Monday in a .....pink slip. With 4 inch heels. Frankly, I think that would be hysterical. But I don't want to detract from your idea of black, it's a good one (you'll look like a flock of crows - not a bad look). Personally, I thought of wearing Red and Khaki, you know? "Cuz it's going to be a Red and Khaki Wedding. Heaven help us all.

There is life after Target. You may think you love it, but when your gone and get to the real world you will see how fake and toxic that place really is. Hope for the pink slip, you will be better off in the long run.

Hi all, original poster here and I'm appreciating the dialogue - I completely understand everyone's opinions. This type of social movement obviously isn't for everyone. But please realize this isn't just about Target - this about my co-workers who have families to feed and mortgages to pay. The people who are working hard everyday for a company they love and have been devoted to for years. I'm wearing black to show them and even those that I don't know but have walked the halls for the past five years that I'll be thinking of them and their families. Good luck to everyone - I hope things work out for you. #blacktuesday

Do what you want, but understand that the Twin Cities is a much smaller place than it appears. A manager may be asked by a friend to provide an off the record reference for you. What do you want that reference to be, that you went out with class and dignity or made some silly protest? Think about your future, and what works best for you.

@75479 I think this is a great idea and it has nothing to do with the type of employee I am but the type of human being I am. I would be happy to share my work calendar with you which would show zero 'coffees' or 'status' with my friends. I work my ass off for this company and average a 50 hour work week... It doesn't matter though cause Targey doesn't care about us. But I care about my co-workers and I'll be wearing blsck. #blacktuesday

@75458, you and those like you are the problem. Now, If there was an efficient way to identify you all I'm sure we could corral well over 3000 useless team members. Oh wait, we could just visit the Great Hall to find most of them.

This could actually bring just a little more bad attention to the company that is about to shit on us all if it is successful. Can we get some media coverage?

@75454 sounds like someone is bitter. Target is about community. This type of 'Junior High Activity' is actually a great way to help build morale, support, and inclusivity. #blacktuesday

This is one more reason i dont miss target. More junior high activities from the prissy kids in the towers. What will you ever do without a great team card every week. Maybe you could continue sending them to each other afterwards..,,thank you for being on the 14 person committe debating what shade of red we should us, even though after 10 weeks our illustrious director decided on white, your participation built shareholder value.
