Thread regarding MetLife Inc. layoffs

Cross training

They are really hitting the cross training hard in US business. This isn’t an opportunity for you to learn, it’s an opportunity for the company to seamlessly put someone else in your place after you are fired. Don’t fool yourself, there’s nothing in it for you.

Next LTL ask about layoffs. Layoffs have hit nearly every industry. Hold the shareholders accountable through the patsy puppet, CEO

Ask yourself, is your pay increase going to help you financially? Is that bonus going to make you life better? Pay for the medical and dental bills? Allow you to take a real vacation?

There was a leader who shared something very personal with the team and it triggered people. Leader still there. Not cool. What was everyone to do? Go to HR? Their useless managers.

Some people can’t show up to work because they have an abusive boss. Or department.

You ask for emotional intelligence training yet clearly need some yourself. People don’t own false narratives let alone worry about them being triggered. False narratives are typically pushed onto someone and usually unfairly by others. Yuck….this is what is wrong with MetLife.

I agree- can’t we just work…

What on earth? Just show up and work. Sounds like you are up to no good if you are worried about triggering people.

@Not a Black Jacket

Change is scary. Change can paralyze. So it’s not exactly like they are being “resistant”.

Some emotional intelligence training is freaking needed at MetLife!! Sc--w the drag Queen shows, sc--w the, I am a bis-xual, purple haired..and my pronouns are xy or xyz

There are…how do you say it without triggering someone’s false narrative..

There are Normal people who work at MetLife.

MyPath and Cross Training have always felt like being “used”. Sure I got a paycheck but it was way below market which felt like being “used” as well.

Then there was a company focus group. The premise was deceptive. Felt “used”

Feeling “used” is triggering. Feeling “used” feels like abuse.

Some may keep abusive managers and co-workers in order to achieve and execute a plan.

But I do not like the pain abuse inflicts. Metlife is not my friend. It is not a safe place for me to grow professionally.

Bravo! Bravo! @Brittany Likes Onions

Let’s ask for SLACK

Maybe more honesty will happen. SLACK groups.

You know like at Twitter, they had a Boston University SLACK group.

There is safety in numbers.

This:
“I will promote those individuals who have made an effort to cross train others, receive and solicit cross training from others, and effectively increase their scope of knowledge (so I can make a case during the budget process to increase the scope of their role).”

Make a case during the budget process to increase the scope of their roles - can you be a little more passive aggressive? You really mean-budget process to increase THEIR PAY.

This is why no one likes their managers! They lie. They obfuscate the truth. They play favorites. They wouldn’t know talent if it hit them in the face. Because they think we are all stupid.

Perhaps if the company started telling us all the truth about the direction of the company instead of BS gaslighting and forcing the latest social agenda on us, we’d have some respect for them.

Like how about answering this directly? Will there be layoffs in 2023? Yes or No? What parts of the company? US Business? What divisions of US Business?

That’s where the real respect meets the pavement.

Peeling back the layers of the onion…

Why are you being asked to engage in cross training?

Because management do not know what people are doing.

Why don’t management know what people do?

Because job descriptions are outdated and inaccurate.

Why are job descriptions outdated and inaccurate?

Because the practice of piecing apart jobs and offloading additional responsibilities across the workforce has become common practice while updating job descriptions with additional responsibilities and paying accordingly has not been common practice.

Why are jobs being pieced apart and redistributed?

Because over time empty positions, due to attrition, have not been backfilled.

Why have empty positions not been backfilled?

Because every $ saved by not backfilling is more $ to spread across the top. Even though leadership have most likely told those who pick up extra work from others that they would eventually backfill and extra work is only temporary.

Now, Why are we cross training???

Cost cutting & Business continuity.

Layoffs on the horizon. And, you can bet your bonnet that we will see more attrition…it’s inevitable following news of bonus and raises.

You will be doing more work, work which exceeds your current job description and salary which BTW is most likely already inaccurate. You most likely have already been doing more…work pushed to you with some BS spin such as “we are a MetLife family” and “you are a good team player”…this propaganda only applies one way of course. You will be abruptly shown the door with the story that this is business and not personal…

but what? Wait… I thought we were family!? Don’t buy info this BS.

Always remember.. This is a place of business.

Don’t be a dummy. Bring your whole self to work! What that phrase now means to me is …bring your whole self to work and NOT half of your brain.

Wake up folks. Don’t fall for manipulation.

If you are happy with these tactics. If DIE makes you feel warm and fuzzy - keep marching forward wooden soldier.

Just remember; your job can be pieced apart, automated or moved to a lower cost region by your own MetLife family tomorrow.

Hey kids - meet MyPath! Yes, My Path is here to help YOU and YOUR career path…

Guess what - that backfired didn’t it…here we are cross training.

If you are questioning current practices including your future with MetLife. Then, that is all of the motivation and confirmation that you need. That’s your sign that it IS time to get out.

I agree - TRUTH HURTS.

Go ahead wooden soldiers- downvote me!
Hit me baby one more time!

@3ujq+1l73qplo Well, you are not getting the point as looks like you are from upper management and stay in a bubble.
Doing cross LOB work is not an issue but over burden of work and catering to current work as well as other LOB work due to lack of resources is an issue here. And all these stress for 2-4% increment and still fighting to prove your worth and value during AVIP and promotion.

As a people leader and manager of a relatively large team, I will promote those individuals who have made an effort to cross train others, receive and solicit cross training from others, and effectively increase their scope of knowledge (so I can make a case during the budget process to increase the scope of their role).

That’s it.

If you are resistant to change and being a lump on a log, you’re going to get passed over…. Every. Single. Time.

You own your own career - it’s up to you on whether you want to grow in your role, or not. If done right, the work effort stays the same.

Frankly upper management don’t value people who do actual ground work. They are in a bubble with no touch to reality. They don’t know the stress and struggle faced every day by employees doing actual work. Doing cross LOB work is pushed into our annual goals.

So let me get this straight. The company talks a lot about ESG... Environmental, Social, and Governance. They boast about how focused they are when it comes to the environment and how they are taking steps to achieve Carbon neutrality. So all this talk about RTO means the company is full of hot air and make statements like this only for media clips, or their printed
literature, or to gain favor in winning contracts. If they truly meant what they say, RTO would be the furthest thing from their minds as it would mean more cars on there road, more pollution, etc....
Seems like they are all talk.
Instead of being a truly progressive company, they are trying to go back to the old brick and mortar models. Those models are dated and dying.
If they do make this decision, the company will lose top talent to the companies who have truly embraced and moved to the Work from Anywhere model.

Cross training could also be preparing to sell a part of the business.

But, it's more likely about moving jobs to cheaper places.

They will give you the standard line. "There are no layoffs At This Time" but we will continue to monitor the ecosystem and take appropriate action as necessary"
They will never do a large job action as they would do anything to avoid it going to the news media. They do layoffs all the time in small increments. Just look at the company headcount over the years. There has been a steady decline.

Yup. Center Stage. What an honor! Get your points and upgrade your nose hair picker to a jazzy modern electric one! Cuz your worth it.

No acknowledgment for hard work is because you, are not important to your boss. To your boss getting ahead or getting full AVIP. Managing up is the name of the game.

Yeah why isn’t AVIP transparent? All secret. Only Director’s and up are allow to know the pyramid scheme.

I was made to clean other peoples mess and s**t work at an accelerated pace along with other ongoing projects. Got everything done before time working day and night. Not a single word of appreciation or center stage recognition while these leaders do nothing but get recognition even for asking questions in meetings and are praised for absolutely no productive work.

Ask your boss. What is it exactly you get out of it? Tell your boss you appreciate making him/her look good but ask where is the benefit to you?

Are you learning a valuable skill for enhancing your job? Or are you cleaning up someone else’s mess with no personal reward. Its always transactional. Stop and think. What’s in it for me. Because you know employees are expendable with the exception of those that have kissed the ring.

If you want to cross train to learn - go for it. It should be optional. Is it in your job description?

AVIP should be given without conditions/ratings. It should be an equal amount given to all regardless of biased “rating” systems. Leave for a better paying job where you are respected before they “transact” you themselves.

Well we do not have a say in it. I am pushed as a share resource and slogging to help in other projects bcz my boss wanted to look good and committed to help them without my opinion or any discussion of my preference.
