Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

30 Mile Radius - how close are you?

Recently moved and now I’m apparently 30.1 miles from the nearest hub which is about a 45 min - 1.5 hour drive depending on traffic.

HR says that I’m “within” the 30 mile range.

I’ve pulled maps on my own, it goes from 30.1 to 31 to as high as 50 miles.

Should I even try to fight this? How far are you from your hub within that 30 miles?

@k0 critical thinking and common sense get a lot of down votes here. I hate RTO as much as anyone and thing it's all fu--ing stupid and such a waste of time, but this is the hand we're dealt. They've been crystal fu--ing clear about their desire to have USB be primarily an in-office culture. I don't understand why someone would move further away from a hub and then get mad they have a longer commute and still have to go in. At this point they did this to themselves and are mad about their self inflicted consequences.

@jv This is the common sense+critical thinking combo we need more of.

@h0 I'm sorry, but they've been REALLY clear about the fact that once you're assigned to a hub there is basically zero way of changing that. I was also hired remote and am now assigned to a hub.

You chose to move further away. You still have to go in. It all absolutely blows, and isn't right at all but this is the policy. These are the choices you made so you either go in, quit, or get fired. They're not going to approve you for remote work at 30.1 miles or 300 miles. Sorry, but that's just the situation now. If you made this decision without actually reading up on it or doing your due diligence that's on you.

@h0 So you CHOSE to move, 30.1 (likely driving and not straight-line) miles away from a hub, after the decision related to distance was made, and what? Expected the company to give you an exception? Thought you were going to land yourself a GOTCHA moment? Felt like trying to fight HR for fun?

Please quit and make room for someone who isn't a total mo--n.

@em Did we accept English rule? Did we accept bias towards other. Speak up and fight for the right things, if not just leave America.

@ak I moved and now am 30.1 miles outside of a hub. Originally hired as remote, not hybrid, 100% remote.

Gunjan thinks we are birds and we fly to the office. That’s ridiculous. Commute times are over an hour towards two hours with traffic. Reality is they come up with bullsh-t to mess with us daily. This HR fool, Elfio needs to fall in a hole and take GK with him.

I'm outside the 30 mile radius, but being a people leader had to come back in the office. It's the way things are moving people. Accept and move on.

What? You can't take your personal chopper like GK? 30.1 miles is only a 10 minute commute!

@a7 It's by "as the crow flies" NOT driving mileage. Never was driving mileage.

LOL! I ain't a crow though. Not even a bird ...

I just finally learned what radius means. Thanks to that person!

This also seems like OP accidentally moved themselves closer to the hub?

Wait so we're you already designated to a hub and then you move further? Or you moved and you're now closer.

If it's option 1, they've been very clear on "even if you move out of your hub area you still have to come in". So you could move 3 hours away and you'd need to be there 3+ days per week still. It doesn't get you out of RTO.

If you 30 miles out, then your job can go thousands of miles out offshore....

IIRC, it doesn't matter if you moved out of the radius, as long as you were already in it when they made the determinations, you are still locked into RTO. They've thought of it all, folks.

Prefacing this with the fact that I disagree 110% with the RTO and the way it's been handled. The ongoing chatter about distance related to hubs these past two years has left me with pretty much only one question-

How do so many people in this company not seem to understand what RADIUS means???

IT'S A BIG OL' CIRCLE, FOLKS! It's straight-line distance, not driving distance. If you're in the circle that spans 30 miles in every direction, the circle that is 60 straight-line miles across, they expect you in the office. I don't like it either, but how is this so hard to grasp. Ha ha I live 30.1 miles away now should I argue with the people who have the power to fire me while letting them know I don't know what basic words mean? GOD.

This is the garbage that makes this miserable situation that much worse.

For Pete's sake, we're hemorrhaging talent through layoffs and voluntary attrition and meanwhile we somehow just cannot shake the people without two brain cells to rub together.

@OP I am 29 miles. Takes me 45min on a good day but usually takes an hour. It is what it is, sadly. I am within range.

I was well outside the radius in driving miles but since they measure it as if you took an actual helicopter to work I was within the radius. Remote jobs are still out there for people who don't want to waste 3 hours of their day checking a box only for them to keep moving the goalposts.
