Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

What hurt most !

I was one of the 1400 laid off. I was in GT - exceptional ratings, driving critical work - none of that mattered. What mattered was that I was remote and my manager didn't bother asking for an exception for me. But that didn't hurt.

On day of layoffs and after quite a few colleagues reached out - some out of genuine concerns and some out of courtesy. Thank you. I will keep you in my heart forever.

What hurt most was - I worked closely with lot of folks for years, helped them day in and out but they didn't bother to send a single text or make a call. I know we were not family and they proved it. At he end it was just about driving some KPIs for a "for profit company" - nothing more nothing less. I am moving on but had to get this out.

@OP - I'm really sorry. As someone who made it past the cuts and is completely done, I couldn't imagine cutting off my friends.

It's been heartbreaking every day, and I'm checking on them. Fu-k the fake ones. I hate that part of Nike. Not every person is like that.

Sadly this place is full of two-faced backstabbers. I’m sorry that you lost your job.

That’s how Nike and most companies are. Your “friends” at work were friendly because you spent a lot of time with them. After you leave Nike you’ll never again hear from most of them.

It’s sort of hard to understand until you leave Nike and then actually see for yourself that “real friends” and “work friends” aren’t usually the same thing. I left Nike two years ago and had dozens of “friends”. How many do I still connect with on occasion? One. Exactly one. To the rest of my Nike “friends” I was a colleague who no longer works there.

It’s a job. It feels like something more than that when you work there but trust me; after you leave Nike you’ll better understand it was always just a job with a company that puts forth a better than average effort at convincing you it’s something “greater” than just work you do for a paycheck.

It isn’t.

In the past, I was one who didn’t know what to say or whether the person laid wanted to hear from me or needed space.

When I was laid off, I really appreciated the people who reached out. It meant a lot to me.

I don’t think it’s fair to assume that everyone who didn’t reach out doesn’t care.

Those rating never mattered.

If we don't already have a relationship outside of work, I wouldn't reach out to you outside of work. The lines are already drawn.

Im surprised how many people expect it when they don't bother interacting with those same people outside of work before being laid off

Ok as someone who struggles with never knowing what to say or do in moments of sadness, grief, or failure, and absolutely don’t want people to be reaching out to me in such moments (even though I am a huge extrovert), I'd urge you to consider that some people indeed don’t care, while others just don’t know how to deal with it. I’m sorry you are going through this though.

Jokes on you for actually caring about your end of year rating

First, who are the dou--e nozzles who downvoted this?

Second, and I say this to everyone who wasn’t laid off… Nike is not loyal to you. Nor are your coworkers. Act accordingly.

The company does not care about its employees and neither does any other company. The only reason they do ra ra stuff is to get more work out of you. There is no loyalty whatsoever. We are temps. Think about that before you install that license plate frame or get that tattoo. And no your work pals are not your friends.

I was also one of the people laid off because I was remote. My manager, who I thought I'd built a friendly rapport with over the last year, didn't even bother messaging me. If I hadn't messaged him over Slack, he never would have reached out.

At the end of the day, we're all numbers (as shown by the layoff email from HR), and Nike's shown that GT is pretty much done. One day, those people will eventually get laid off too, and experience this for themselves. What goes around comes around.
