They got good severance packages.
Were rehired back as consultants @ $100 per hour rate.
Some middle management managers are playing this game.

@OP I call BS on this post. There is a claw back clause on severance benefits if a RIF’d employee is employed again in a certain time period.
I am a manager and had no say whatsoever in the recent decisions, I only discovered it one day before the general announcement, I tried to keep a team member as I had already a new position approved, but that was rejected.
Do not believe this.
Do you have any examples of this? You, of course, don’t need to mention the name, but product, area, or anything…
