Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Do they even know what it is we do?

It feels like the people making decisions no longer have a clue what our work actually involves. We tell them what's broken and they just ignore it. They acknowledge our concerns and then do absolutely nothing about them. Why should I trust anything they say at this point?

Thing is, if they don't know what it is you really do, it's not important and you should feel fortunate you are getting a paycheck. They'll eventually figure out that what you do is no longer necessary and deal with it, but if you don't have leadership actively involved in what it is you work on, it's not relevant.

I'm a bit confused when it comes to the "no longer" part. What do you mean?

The company has always revolved around one single thing; metrics.

Numbers in a sheet that doesn't have to make any sense and once everyone knows what they are, they make an effort to cheat the numbers because that's the deciding factor on what happens next. Nobody gives a sh-t about calling it out because that have literally nothing to gain from doing that.

Then you have the layers of higher management that just look at these "reports" and make their decisions based on it.

The whole system is broken and has been for decades and literally everyone (well, except for maybe the one who should) knows it.

The one and only deciding factor for "advancement" in the company is who you know.

Did you do a great job? Nobody cares. Unless you know the right person in which cases you'll get inspire awards and promotions. Be utterly useless? Also fine, you'll be promoted as long as you're best buds with whoever is above you.

Biggest achievement of a sr. manager in my organization? Cracking bad jokes in calls and the director liked them. That's the level.

True story. We once had a manager (in ISG) tell the group he was going on a two-week business trip to meet with key strategic Dell accounts. He pushed all of his workload on us while he was gone. Turns out, he was on a beach in the Bahamas with his girlfriend.

The Dell leaders I know lie, cheat, and take credit for other people's work. They would gladly sell their grandmother for a nickel if they could. They're the worst sc-mbags in the industry. Anyone else have a similar story?

As with all targets in Dell they will exceed to be the "best boy" in class to enhance their own position. The goal is to reduce to 80k... bet they will go to 70k overall.

@OP

Everyone is going through it. Dell is down to 97000 people. They have a plan or an ongoing plan but they won't share it with the general population. One Dell Way seems to be pivotal and may give us a clue as to what is going on. That is probably why they aren't listening to anyone or not listening more than normal. I think you need to wait until we get to the end of the calendar year. It may become clearer.

Well said. They are all friends and family. The same is true in IT as well. They only care about their next promotion and, therefore, spend at least eight hours a day smooching up to their superiors. They don’t have time to listen to your 'broken' stories. You are a peasant. You had better work. Be happy with your 1% pay raise and no promotions. The larger raises and promotions are meant for friends and family. IT is full of Indian friends and family; no one else can break through. Sad!

@OP The "people" making decisions haven't had a clue for over a decade. They are nepotisically hired and protected, few have any qualifications, and most have never even worked in the field they're managing. Do the research, you'll see for yourself. They're all friends and family. Leadership at Dell, especially in ISG, is a running joke!
