@ad assuming the boss likes the person in-office. If the boss thinks they’re an obnoxious twit, the last place he wants you is in his face 3 days a week.
@ad sounds great, but plenty of groups’ entire team ( including several layers of leadership) are completely spread out geographically. the story falls apart quickly once it runs into real world reality.

If two people perform equally and one chooses in office and the other chooses wfh; the in office employee who established a better relationship with their leader and was able to have more face to face interaction, will be safe when the time comes. People don’t want to hear that but it’s true. Create your own destiny.
Well, basically is telling you that as long as you perform well and complete your work efficiently, you can work from Mars if you would like...in other words, business is what matters!!!! Common sense!!!
