Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Positive Feedback. No Raise. Make It Make Sense.

Throughout the year, I was consistently told that I was exceeding expectations and performing at a high level. My feedback conversations reflected strong performance and meaningful contributions to the team.

However, during my annual review, I received a rating of 3 and was informed that I would not be receiving a raise. This outcome did not align with the feedback I received throughout the year.

Additionally, compensation decisions were not determined by my direct supervisor, who has firsthand knowledge of my day-to-day performance. Instead, they were made by a VP who has only been with the team for a short period of time and has not had the opportunity to fully understand individual contributions.

I have also learned that colleagues who previously received ratings of 5 were given ratings of 2 this year and were subsequently written up, without prior warning that their performance was considered below expectations. All of these evaluation and compensation decisions were made by the same VP.

@cn Then get sued by the states for rejecting claims that hold have been paid. But offshore workers can care less.

@cj last year my supervisor said the raise amount had been set. But upper management declined them and asked them not to give 5s. So everyone's merit decreased drastically due to higher ups

@c8 Actually, they can and they do. Our Director told us in a meeting that 5% of the team has to get 2's. I've seen people get them that should have had 4's. So even if you're entire team are 4's and 5's. Doesn't matter, someone is going to f'd. That should be illegal.

@c4 I feel you. My college aged daughter said the 1% was a slap in the face and such an insult.

I’m only back here to glean information why the stock is in the sh----r! But I can explain it easily, this company does not pay for performance. I scored 5 across the board one year and only got 3.5% merit increase. Most years I got 4s and a 1-1.5% merit increase, if you got 3’s an acceptable performance, you got nothing! Annual reviews are used by management to promote the people they like and sh-t on the ones they don’t, it explains your other point of how you go from superstar to schmuck in one year, you pi---d off a director. This capricious performance review is part of an entrenched cronyism in the management ranks, they want good soldiers, team players, yes men! Kiss a-s, do everything you’re told and you can survive here. Try to bring over 20yrs experience into the business area when your boss only has 5-10yrs experience and you intimidate them or pi-s them off. Sounds brutal and wrong but that’s how I learned they operate over 14yrs working here and so I thank God He moved me on! Nothing will change, quiet quit and collect your check and start looking outside. This company doesn’t survive or thrive because it’s well managed it survives because health insurance is a cash cow of government money and now possible fraud allegations. I’m here because I know it’s the mismanagement of the good old boys that has tanked the value of the company!

@cv This company has way too many VPs and many of them have no business carrying that title.

It's sad - but reality.

You do not mean anything to UHG / Optum... NOTHING!

You are a pawn... even at the director / VP level [now].

They use you, abuse you, then toss you aside.

Many times I have let my management know what happened to me in the past, and that it WILL happen to them eventually and it always comes true.

Just trying to get to retirement as I am too old to be low man on the totem pole at another place!

Good luck to all - in the words of a very wise man... Fu-k them!

@a4 This is true. Happened to a team that reported the manager. She was picking on the people who weren’t white. They than moved all those to orher teams who reported the incidents.

@c8 Yes they can. Happened to someone who literally was sick and trying to do the job anyway. The manager knew exactly the persons struggles and she put her on a CAP. The manager is a piece of sh-t. But try as she can to get rid of this person, karma has stepped in. Nothing a good attorney can’t fix.

The performance process at Optum's only purpose is to keep salaries low and justify lay offs. It is doing exactly what it is meant to do.

@OP well you keep believing the kool aide. Love the way people believe any fairy tale their manager tells them and I bet your manager/ supervisor had lots to do with your rating and the outcome of your raise. I bet she/ he got a raise and a nice hefty one. There are no transparent managers at UHG / Optum because if there were they all be gone. Their only job is to manipulate you to put in tons of work and gaslight you, and make sure you tow the line.

UHG/Optum philosophy:
US worker=bad and is disposable
Offshore worker = good must get more
They dont care about quality. Only made up numbers on reports and how cheaply they can get them.

@a4 you’re correct. Two years in a row I was told that I was at the top of the pay band and received a pittance of a raise. 100% personal multiplier bonus however it doesn't make up for the disrespect. I too had exemplary feedback, a mentor and supportive team mates however there was always an excuse to hold me back. HR investigations uncovered some things but ultimately nothing was done and I was treated so shabbily that I left.

I got 3 and no raise no bonus.
my manager was said to share that with me knowing that I deserve more but this decision is made from some where else.
And Yes, for the same review in it happens in offshore the candidate must get a decent raise and bonus. Let's go to offshore.
They have no interest if you resign they will hire one more happily in offshore.

It’s a business decision that su-ks, but you have the power. Update your resume, take trainings…find your true value elsewhere. When they ask you why you left say….”it’s a business decision”

If there’s one thing I’ve learned at Optum, it’s that the quality of your work doesn’t really matter. You know what does? A-s-kissing. Be the smiley su-k up who delivers average quality work, but make everyone else feel happy while you do it. In this company, your personality is possibly the most important thing.

Managers can’t just arbitrarily give you a 2 on your MAP and write you up without previous performance warnings or conversations. You have to send in all documented supporting data before HR approves.

Rock star.
Excellent metrics.
3 overall rating.
NO raise.

Meanwhile corporate stashes millions on our backs.
My young adult son got an 8% raise and a $7,000 bonus.
So humiliating.
Do we hear the people sing yet?

@an The manager can allocate the ratings how they please but leadership can adjust it as they see fit when it all comes down to it. Sure some managers don't care and will just follow the guidance as well, but it doesn't mean their manager did.

The VPs typically tell the managers how many 2s, 3s and 4s etc. are needed. The manager almost always chooses who gets what number. The manager was absolutely a part of the decision.

The real reason is because there is a mandate to use stacked ranking, even on pretty small teams. Leaders can go against it but many of them will simply adjust ratings to get rid of any warnings and so they don't end up on a report themselves and have to explain why their org didn't follow the stacked ranking system.

You may be on a really good team of high performers, or in an org where they wanted to give a certain few people 5s, and you got the short end of the stick and were given a low rating to balance things out.

It's a d-mb system, and our leaders are pathetic for it.

There is no rhyme or reason to this. They are not obligated to give you a raise or keep you employed sadly. We are all on borrowed time to 100% in either Manila or 100X AI data centers in Virginia.

When are people going to learn that going above and beyond is a fool's path here? Do the minimal amount needed to complete your job, don't volunteer for anything, clock out after your 8 hours, don't put work apps (email) on your personal phone, and sit back and skate by. Only the naive actually think working your tail off will result in anything.

If you contest the results, wait for retaliation. It will come with a face of changing teams, assignments with very aggressive completion date, and finally your position will be eliminated. No consideration on cost of living, new premium costs, etc. It is so unfair and a disservice to hard-working people.

the 5's getting 2's are on the chopping block because they make too much money. nothing more nothing less. in this economy layoffs and "low performance" don't mean anything anymore.
