Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Review time coming up

With reviews coming up, if you get placed on a PIP and receive a 2 score, start looking for work elsewhere immediately. PIP is no longer a program to get you back up to a 3 to meet standards. Its almost always used now as a way to lay you off in the near future. They used to work with people to get them back to 3s and above, but now its just a tactic to use to RIF you.

Of course it can be without warning. 2s are handed out at review scoring time. Most get no heads up because the managers horse trade who gets the 3s and who gets the 2s during that time. I've been here over 20 years and have been in management. Getting a heads up along the way is a rarity because most managers don't "manage".

@jq I doubt it is without warning. Otherwise your manager could not give you a two. There is an entire process you have to go through when scoring someone especially if they are below a three. And especially if they go on a corrective action plan. I’m calling bullsh-t.

@jb I beg to differ. I have known several past team members who were given 2 ratings due to the forced rating process (i.e., x% have to be in the 2 bucket). Excuses were created and gaslighting ensued. At no time prior to them being told they were receiving a 2 were they told there were any issues they needed to correct or that they were tracking towards a 2. Some "managers" simply don't conduct their 1-on-1's (cancel them, don't schedule, etc.). So, it comes as a surprise and without warning.

There is no such thing as getting a two, without a warning. no offense, but if you are performing, you have gotten a two? Your manager has to have a reason as to why you got that. It isn’t just a score – there has to be a narrative behind it and there are guidelines with the scoring they have to use.

If you actually track your projects, metrics etc then you can easily pull out your documentation and rebut the 2. I will do it and tag every leader above them to ask why I am a 2. I will never accept a 2. I would have nothing to lose by doing this as they would be trying to get rid of me anyways. But I will not let anyone think I am a 2, as I have documentation. So they can do what they want, but everyone will hear about it from me. 100000000000000%. The scare tactics are now gone, I am now feeling confident, I know my work and credentials are valuable. I am not letting them let me feel small. The moment the ties and handcuffs of my tuition reimbursement come off, this place will mean nothing to me and I can finally be free of UHG.

Uh no. I will not leave willingly. They will have to fire me so I get unemployment.

They give out 2s without warning all of the time at this company. It’s not about your work it’s about how much they like you and how much money you make. Then they make cr-p up about you if you ask why you are a 2 or a low 3 for that matter.

@OP Very true. For the most part all of the REAL 2's are gone, If you that or even a low 3, you're not long....

The managers are all about them. Many gaslight, manipulate their teams and have no real interest in anybody but themselves looking good and keeping their jobs safe. I swear I have seen some that are bat sh-t crazy, alcoholic, on so many pysche dr-gs you wonder how they even work. Love that they act knowledgeable when most can’t figure out the right from the left. They always have that one person on the team who has the years and the experience so they tap them constantly meanwhile never giving credit.

This company works in bad faith. We did what we were told and then some. We fulfilled our part of the bargain. We followed their so called "leadership". Now, when it comes time for them to compensate for work that was already done, they give 0-1% raises for onshore workers, sc--w most of the people out of bonuses while giving offshore 7% + raises, promotions and much of the bonus money.

VPs and Executives - Save us your empty slogans and culture B.S. No one is fooled. Most do not like or respect you. You have managed to demoralize large swaths of the work force. Layoffs and losses are a result of your incompetence. I hope many quiet quit and work according to their paltry compensation.

Leaving Optum is the single best thing that can happen to your career. People claiming they have no other options have been successfully victimized by UHG into accepting net pay cuts (401k cuts, doing work of multiple people).

Notice how the top level people in orgs come and go? And the reliable workhorses stay forever? That is by design. Dedication and consistency to one employer is the single biggest self-scamming you can do in your career.

If you get a 2 with no warning, that’s a failure of your manager or the leadership chain. Unfortunately, this isn’t surprising here—there are plenty of managers who barely spend a moment thinking about their teams. So I won’t be shocked to hear more stories like this, or even to end up in that situation myself. And I’m almost certain my manager hasn’t read my year‑end input or noticed that, based on the agreed‑upon rubric, I met the criteria for a 4 or 5 in every category.
