Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Why bother trying so hard?

I'm so tired of ki-ling myself at work when it feels like no one even notices. I could do the bare minimum and get the same thankless result. It's frustrating to realize that going above and beyond here doesn't get you anything but more work. How's that okay?

@es You have a manager that supports you? This is an experience I don’t have.

@ae Same time here, same experience, and I share the same view.

Managers and Directors have their hands tied, and you should know it. Every year I submit multiple associates for 4s and am told every year I can have one, or sometimes none. Organizations funnel higher ratings to connected VPs and Staff VPs. Your manager hates it as much as you do but has no choice.

@kp UM is tanking because of their leadership or lack thereof -haven't been off a PIP in years - the staff are paying for it and nothing ever changes at the level above.

I did the work of 2.0 people for 4 years, then got another .5 added for the next 3 years just to be Riff'd off in 2024. I performed the work of 2.5 people, and they wonder why UM is tanking now.

You need to say yes to everything about the work whether you know it ot not whether you can do it or not. You can take help from team members and they will help you and show to your manager like you did. Here no one is bothered how u did as long as you show off your work to them
That is how its work.

@ab Correct! When I was with this dump of a company I was kind of like the Hawkeye Pierce of the company - excellent at what I did, but a little rough around the edges. This is why I'm no longer with the company. They don't care about results, they care about likeability and doing what you're told even if it's the wrong thing. WHO NEEDS IT?!

Don’t work too much you need to keep leads and manager in your grip. You do the work with help of any of your team member and just show with them like you completed. This is how it is working here. Even if everyone knows doesn’t matter as long as your manager supports you no need to worry. This is how I do.

@bx re: told during my evaluation that because I don’t talk more in meetings I’m getting in my own way

My suggestion if you need/want one
_ In future meetings try these tips

  • I'm sorry I am not sure I caught that - can you repeat or rephrase you were cutting out - then - "Thank you, interesting, good point, had not thought of that, gonna try that, sounds like a plan/new approach"
Or - I have a question and could use the group's suggestion on how to do xyz more effectively, etc ( whatever fits your work )

You have an insecure manager who needs agreement - none of this will change your overall rating or get you a larger merit and why care but it will redirect the target on your back for awhile. Not talking in meetings is not uncommon, you are getting her way not yours. But Chat GPT told her to tell you this -

The goal - met standards, head down, don't make waves, plan for retirement or look for another job. Good Luck

@bx If you did talk more, you would probably pi-s off an insecure person above you and then make yourself a target for the next round of riffs. You can’t win for losing at this place.

No longer going above and beyond been doing the work of an upper level but yet told during my evaluation that because I don’t talk more in meetings I’m getting in my own way…keep in mind I am not in a leadership role Smfh

Look at our CEO, for example. The stock is in the toilet yet she keeps her job (and gets bonuses too!)

I’ve been here over 25 years. Used to ki-l myself trying to do everything and gave 200%+ to the point that it was a detriment to my health. I stated to realize it didn’t matter how much I did I’d always get “meet expectations”. I just do what I can now.

@OP

Time for you to learn that touching a hot stove will burn you. Every time. Adjust your effort and output accordingly or find a way to live with it.

Are you more agreeable and go with the flow? Are you a yes man/woman? If so you will be rewarded. Your intelligence and hard work have no bearing. Likeability is what matters.

I’ve literally had years when I tried really hard and years when I didn’t and I got the same “meat expectations” review anyway. It kind of taught me what I needed to know
