Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Band 5 Principal vs Director

Is a B5 IC Principal role less safe from JE than a B5 Director role? Wondering if IC roles at that pay are first to go and if being a people leader gives you more stability.
Are B5 more safe from JE than other bands? Why is this place like this?

"Why-is-this-place-like-this"? Great Question! Did acquiring Express Scripts do this? NO! Poor senior leadership and greed put Cigna in the position it's in today. Examples you ask? How about MILLIONS of $$$ is software being purchased then canned because one man didn't want the company to have the software. How about MILLIONS of $$$ being spent creating software from scratch that already existed cheaper if purchased? How about off-shoring thousands of US jobs because off-shore labor costs 1/3 of what US labor costs? Senior leadership salaries and bonuses are publicly reported - Search it up and watch what they get this year after tanking the US employees last year. https://www.beckerspayer.com/payer/cignas-5-highest-paid-executives-in-2024/

I was laid off this morning, and was a band 5 director. They said they’re keeping me on payroll till April end, and then severance kicks in. Don’t know what that will look like till eod.

Not really related to your question but you know what EN and Cigna could use a lot less of? Middle management. instead of getting rid of people who do the work, maybe get rid of the senior managers, directors, etc who make it appear as if they’re working by just having meetings.

When this layoff phase is over, the people remaining are going to hate their lives almost as much as those who were laid off.

Who is supposed to handle all of the work with less people when we are already swamped? Not sure but if you fail at it, you’re at risk too.

No one is safe. Even if no one else knows how to do what you do, you're still a target. In fact, the higher up a leader is who is making the decision, the less safe you are because leadership doesn't actively learn what their underlings do. Who knows what true metrics they use to decide? Age? Salary? Location? The real reason won't be disclosed.

@OP I have seen both IC principals and directors laid off in previous rounds. I
don’t think they care or it makes a difference.

You are just a number on a spreadsheet. It’s just bad luck.

Principals are also gradually going nonexistent

My VP told us that JE’s would impact all the way up to the SVP level this time so I don’t think any one position is safer than the other this time. It’s going to be brutal for everyone.
