Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Jumping ship?

I’ve agreed to go out for an interview with a competitor. Never thought it would be me looking for roles outside of XOM. I’ve enjoyed my career for the most part, and have generally been ranked well in my 10 years. Past couple of years I got 10%+ raises, but I feel like that’s just a fluke and worse times are around the corner.

It’s sometimes hard to picture leaving when I think of the long term pension and the comfortable career I have. Am I an id--t or is this the moment to leap into the unknown?

I got really close to accepting an offer 2 years ago … energy major, would have been a legit supervisory position (I’m a SME), but they couldn’t come close to making up the RSU hit. Always know your value in the market. If anything, it will help you grumble a little less the next time you have to log into CareerConnect

Chevron here. Employee satisfaction is lowest ever. Stay away.

@mc I ranked very good once, and the rest top 5th during my 10 years and averaged the 9.5%. I’ve had years with 2.5% increases and others where I received 14% but usually it’s around 7-10%.

@ke 10% ave for 10 years is very good. Is this typical? I'm just a middle ground performer and def. Didn't get this good of raises

@jw A lot of people average 10% raises their first 10 years and then it begins to plateau (from what I’ve been told). I have averaged 9.5% a year my 10 years here. I don’t expect this trend to continue for the next decade.

I’m sorry. 10%+ raises regularly? Why would you be leaving when most of us are barely getting 2% raises?

I left XOM after 6 years to take a business leader role with another company. It was the best decision of my career. XOM is a horrible company to work for.

@b5 I’ve heard from a semi-reliable source that there’s so many applicants to Chevron from Exxon that there’s a designated drive just for storing their CVs.

True?

@OP If you’re going to any of the Big-5 it’s the same tu-ds, different toilet. You might even end up taking a pay cut if it’s a lateral move in terms of title and function.

I personally left O&G altogether. Worked out well for me.

@b8

smart person

leave the industry. leave now or fight to win a mass during each year

in 30 years oil harvesting will be a niche trade

It’s just a job, don’t sweat it, if you like the new company and they make a decent offer then go.

You are one bad year of assessment to get kicked out of Exxon. Best to consider options and maximize your earnings.

I wouldn’t be considering the pension if only 10 years in. Hard to believe it will be around in 20 years.
