Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Are sales roles cooked?

I’ve been in tech field sales for 7 years now, is this a dead end career path at this point? I assume I’ll eventually get reduced as well, and it’ll be even bleaker for me to find a new job when it does. What should I be looking to transition into if it is? Sales is all I have experience with.

Shift over to something in the medical field, with all these fat and old folks, getting fatter and older, can't go wrong there! The land of phat IT checks and commissions is long gone, plus zero stability or career growth....

Do you have the technical skills to move into a System Engineer type of role? Those are in demand in the industry.

At Dell? I'd say yes. Tech sales is far more valuable than inside sales - ISR's - ever will be at any company because unlike an ISR, you actually have real and useful knowledge. I'm assuming your role is a TSR?

Any mo--n with a half decent personality can be in sales in all honesty - especially inside sales - but not everyone can be a TSR though. So you do have the upper hand in that but, I'd look at places like Cisco, Palo Alto, SHI, and companies that are far more geared towards technical products. Dell is a computer company at the end of the day. Yeah, dell sells servers and storage and etc... but they are a computer company.

Cisco and Palo Alto are not. SHI is a one stop shop which is why I listed them.

Your best bet is to become a Bit Twiddler, take an online course at MIT, and you too can start making megabucks.
