Thread regarding Cargill layoffs

Take the severance or apply for the job

Hello. I have been told I am being laid off and my term date is 6 months away. I work remotely and live in a small town. There is a job in Cargill in the same level I am that I am qualified for. Debating on whether I take the severance (about a years worth) and run or apply for the job and if I get offered it, lose my severance. Has anyone been through something similar? I can’t really start looking for a job outside yet because of my term date being so far in the future. Thanks in advance. I am just really stressing out and not sure what to do

@OP Hi. I was in a similar situation. I was impacted by the first wave. It’s stressful and demoralizing. I took the severance because it wasn’t the old cargill. It was challenging to find a remote job but I landed one in 6 months (with a better company & higher pay). Our biggest expense during the 6 months was COBRA (family coverage). My advice is to look for an internal position with the same pay or higher for the next 6 months. I’d also start networking outside cargill right away. At the end of the 6 months, if you don’t have the job that you want within cargill, take the severance and never look back. There is life after cargill. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you and everyone who was impacted.

Get a lawyer involved - Cargill is known to do this and sc--w people over. You are better off leaving whether now or in the future so keep at the job hunt either way.

You apply for the job.

Part of the application process will be a question about separation terms you may be under. This may be asked online or if you are granted a first interview. You answer the question. Companies aren't new to this.
