Do not say a word. The hiring manager will do the work when they reach out to your current manager.

Yes. May keep your name off an upcoming list of cuts.

May work in your favor if they can cut Employee Z instead of you for the time being.

Hard NO.
I gave that courtesy once and my former manager went out of their way to smear me with the prospective hiring manager. Don’t risk that happening to you.

Mmmm…. I did that once. Was not a good move. I thought I was telling him in confidence, but he advertised it up to his manager. I didn’t get the job and had to live with the awkwardness for a long time

@OP
Best to have the offer first.
I experienced a manager blocking a move with a teammate and they lost the opportunity. That was the first instance of not trusting my management team with this bank. Many more followed.
Keep your cards close to your chest as they say.

I never told a manager about any interview before I got an offer and accepted. Only one ever came across as shocked. Managers should expect their employees to sell better opportunities.

no, tell them once you are close to an offer, although the hiring manager will need to talk to them to settle on a transition date before they can get an offer out
