Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Where you at?

Seems as though we’ve lost all our people in the know on this board??

Wondering if the lack of info being shared on teams at risk and future of more waves is because there’s nothing to share, they’ve been warned about leaks and gone silent or are more and more people (including our informants) getting dead tired of any of this talk and don’t care anymore or have left themselves.

Lots of job postings, not India, what’s that about, fake? Hiring back same roles for less?

99% likely that early retirement will be offered in technology staring Q1. HR keeping the list close to the vest. If it works like it did for the business, they offered the basic layoff package. Calling it early retirement when it's actually a voluntary layoff probably makes leadership feel good about themselves and probably comes with Corp tax benefit. Good luck replacing some of these veterans supporting legacy systems with cheap HIH staff. Remains to be seen how many will take the offer in this economy along with the outrageous cost of health insurance

@pz don’t fall for the AI hype. Yes, some things can be replaced by AI. ‘Some’. If a large majority of jobs were being replaced by AI, why would companies be investing billions in India infrastructure and jobs? Just throwing money away? I think not. AI is the excuse to keep Americans from going to college for IT and the excuse to replace us with cheap Indian workers. CEOs please stop insulting our intelligence with the AI threat BS

@pz true. But we have to start somewhere. Contact your senators and reps to support this Act.

The HIRE Act is significant and would signal a major policy shift IF enacted. Do not assume it would fully stop outsourcing or stop all companies from sending jobs overseas. It would raise costs, create incentives for change but it will also lead to work around strategies. Basically what wouldn’t still be worth outsourcing to a company, would be taken over by AI. AI has already been introduced to a lot of roles already in Cigna. Employees have been actively teaching it their job. The company was and will NEVER be your friend.

@pb

I had mentored several tecdps over the years. All were great young men and women. Here’s what I’d tell them now.

1) Always try to have a business impact for your team. Be able to explain how the work you’re doing benefits your team and your business side stake holders.
2) Keep your own list weekly of what you’ve worked on. A few bullet points will do. Don’t rely on stats from git, confluence, or any other tool. This is a handy reference when you have to summarize your work for yearly reviews (or other intervals if they pop up).
3) Keep learning. If you have time during the work day, take advantage of the various internally available training courses and get certified in anything related to your job that you can.
4) If you can, try to reduce your expenses so that you have 6-12 months of savings in case you are let go unexpectedly. You will incur a 10% penalty if you use 401k savings to tide you over. Plus, that money compounds tax free over time and trust me, you’ll really want it later.
5) Once upon a time, you’d get a tap on the shoulder and your boss would say, ”Great job, congratulations on your promotion.” Not any more. If you want a promotion you need to ask for it and state your case. Promotions are never just granted anymore, anywhere. Plan your career. Have a 5 year plan.
6) Unfortunately, I’d say start looking for another job, outside of working hours and on your own computing devices, of course. Know the going rate for your skill set and see what is happening in the job market. It is tough out there for everyone. Any additional training / certifications you have gotten will help set you apart from your competition.

I miss the techdps I worked with. I wish you success in your post Cigna career.

@pb they are exploring TechDP in India. This is a fact. And they are working with universities to get new hires out of college.

It was pretty well known internally that they can hire 3 people in HIH for the same cost as one person in the US. It took 20 interviews to get one technically adept person in HIH at the level sought. Follow the money.

ELT no doubt was trying to bolster the stock price by reducing headcount (“cost overhead”) before making a hasty exit (likely what Drive to 25 was all about). It looks like the stock market has perhaps caught wind of the sleazy plan and cratered the stock price appropriately. There are those who could use the drop in stock price as a loss to offset other gains. Less so for the ELT for whom CI stock could make up a majority of their portfolio.

@OP what will happen to tecdp? Is everyone all around getting affected? Heard that next year they will start looking specifically at what everybody does, alongside with the impact we bring for that team. Kind of eerie to see, alongside with the increase in HIH. Really hard to even get a post-out now with layoffs looming.

We just had additional layoffs. I think the company is rethinking their strategy now that Senator Moreno has introduced the HiRE act. It is a 25% penalty on Companies sending jobs to India. Look it up and if you want to keep your tech jobs here, ask you senators and reps to support it. AI is NOT replacing tech jobs, India is. For every Indian we have hired, we lay off equal number of employees. And the India benefits are much better than what we have. Up to 60 days of paid time off (sick, personal, PTO, holidays) . Free meals, transportation and subsidized daycare. Wake up people! The company is not your friend.

Never rely on management at any level. Do your own homework and use your leverage.

Gone by either VRP, JE’d, left for better job or just said F it and left.
Nobody should be saying anything that gets posted in here on teams/webex or email.
Cigna can look at them anytime they want.

@OP I think a lot of folks who previously shared inside info were lost in the VRP. A lot of experience was lost too….
