Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

What is up with refining?

It seems like every couple of weeks our refineries have some kind of operations situation. Is this normal? Or should we be concerned?

Whats with all the whimpering and sniveling? Is this where all the high performers go to dry their tears?

@11g There are plenty of other union facilities across the country without the issues that are plaguing whiting. The leadership team is hot garbage. Announcing GC during turnarounds. Basically telling all contractors that they are gone. Really motivating. Making a performance leadership team “probably with pay increases” really solves all the issues. lol. Can’t hire good talent because BP is the laughing stock of the oil industry. Keep cutting costs and taking shortcuts, they’ve made these business priorities before and they ki-led people. Whiting is probably next.

@dg … Impossible to change the culture (people) due to Union rule.

The integrity issues will always be there in a site so old, compounded as you say by poor culture…

Bp should just get shot but too strategic….so it’s fingers crossed no major process safety incident occurs…

Just because whiting had a fire doesn’t mean it wasn’t a drill… it was a drill. The end.

@dx so I guess that the fire at Whiting refinery that was on the news after I made my comment was then a hoax?

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters) - A fire ignited at BP's (BP.L), opens new tab 440,000 barrel-per-day oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana, before it was extinguished on Friday morning, the company said.
The blaze at the largest refinery in the U.S. Midwest caused gasoline prices to spike in parts of the region.

The fire resulted from an operational incident, and there were no injuries, the company said in an emailed statement. It did not elaborate on the incident.

Reuters earlier reported multiple units were offline, according to two market sources that were citing data from consultancy Wood Mackenzie.

REFINERY WAS FLARING
The refinery was actively flaring, the controlled burning of excess gas, early on Friday, one of the sources said, citing a Wood Mackenzie camera feed of the plant.
Wood Mackenzie confirmed it had issued an alert to clients saying the 255,000-bpd crude distillation unit, associated 60,325-bpd vacuum distillation unit, 100,000-bpd cat feed hydrotreater, and 24,300-bpd hydrotreater were shut during the early morning.
In addition, the 115,000-bpd fluid catalytic cr--ker was shut on Thursday evening, Wood Mackenzie said in the alert.

The GoA annual drill was in Helios. This is an annual requirement so don't be alarmed. Coast Guard and other regulatory folks were in attendance to participate as well as evaluate our response performance.

@OP Whiting is a large, very old refinery surrounded by population. It has mechanical integrity concerns and poor operating discipline — both lead to poor reliability & downtime. Continue to expect periodic significant incidents. The XOM and other external management brought in are not nearly enough to ‘fix’ the place without significant cultural change and massive capital expenditures.

They had some big training exercise/conference this week at Helios and when I was in the cafeteria, I overheard some of the Crisis Response people (CCM/ER? On their shirts) that they had people scattered at several refineries with IMT teams due to incidents and they had to bring in extra help from the UK and other places.
