Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

It’s just a job, not a family

I’ll never get why some people act like they’re chained to one company. You're not. Not a single one of us is. If you’re miserable, update your resume, practice your pitch, and start applying elsewhere. No job owns you and there’s always another opportunity waiting, even in this job market.

A long term chevron employee who has years until retirement said to me last week, 'I think I've had my fill of chevron. ' It summed up the current mood quite well.

@e7 Great… Now we’re encouraging the nasty managers to be even worse.

Hilarity. Yep, if we just all sacrifice just a little more for the company, it'll all pay off somehow, somewhere down the line. Maybe not even monetarily. Maybe you'll get a really neat birthday card from a coworker! Won't that make it all worthwhile?

Nah, I'll pass on your ideas. Chevron "leadership" has shown how much they care about the workers. I am matching that energy with no plans on changing any time soon.

Chief Executive Mike Wirth had a stern message for Chevron’s 40,000 employees in February: Stop being so nice to each other.

“We are ‘nice’ even when desired results or behaviors are not achieved,” according to McKinsey’s summary of employee feedback, which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. “We emphasize collaboration and inclusion to build strong teams…but we do not have direct, uncomfortable conversations needed to deliver results.”

The problem is, there is an ever growing number of people treating work as transactional… only wanting what’s best for them and their family (usually money and/or slacking off).

This creates the toxic workforce where more and more apathetic workers just want to roll up, sit around and complain and take take take from the company, rather than do what’s best for the company and colleagues.

Giving back to the company and colleagues doesn’t guarantee rewards, promotions, or even acknowledgement. But it can create friendships, opportunities and ultimately a stronger company is better for everyone.

The company and the industry always has, and always will have layoffs, reorgs and restructures. So why not try to make it a little more enjoyable along the way, for you AND others. It takes a little more energy, and even courage to try to make going to work just a little better… but it’s a whole lot better than checking out and hating 8hrs of every work day.

Nah. Fantastic insight but I've got more active disengagement planned here first.

It’s hard when you spend so much time together and personally take pride in the work. But as others have said, it’s a job and the pay and benefits are there to use where it really counts and that’s at home and with friends.

most important are the folks who stand by you at the end of the day at home
the ones who will cherish you, look after you and send you off on your last few days on earth
those are the pple that matters

do you expect anyone in CVX to be doing the above for you?
its just a transaction. do your work and get your salary
