Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Will IBM pay $100K to hire H-1B employees?

Hmmm.... if saving money is the reason to hire these folks, will IBM cough up a hundred grand? Doubtful, I think. Your thoughts?

Agree with everyone. They don’t need any H1 visas because of the massive hiring in India and those brought over in 90s are already on 2nd or 3rd generation (kids). And ibm is too cheap.

No need soon for so many workers h1b or otherwise, AI is coming and advanced robotics for all our jobs. Doctors, lawyers, pilots, truck drivers, much later plumbers, home builders and stupidly realtors will be last but should be first.

@am

Don't be surprised if Indians have been gaming the H1B system to ensure that Indians were given preferential treatment for jobs in the US, and not H1B applicants from other countries. After all, there was a documentary in the past 2 years that showed how new US passports and passport renewals were being efficiently processed in India (not the US as you might think) at the US embassy. Yes, if one is smart, I'm sure there are ways to game the system to your advantage. There are always loopholes.

@ab yep, build office buildings in 1ndia, no H1B needed,just offshore.
Trump needs to deal with this next. High additional tax on US Corporations for offshoring.

@OP It unlikely that tightwads like Alvind and Krabanaugh will cough up even a measly $100 per H1B visa.

But Trump has the right idea- if you get 10 new 1HB visas, you gotta pay a cool million (10 X $100000) dollars to the US government for the privilege. And for some substandard Indian IT junkies, not top talent. Who needs that ? not Alvind or Krabanaugh for sure.....

Now since tech companies like IBM, Microsoft, Google, Oracle,Meta have been abusing the H1B visa system so much, get 1000 H1B visas and you're gonna pay a trillion dollars. Another nice way to bring down the US deficit. And by the way since all these companies were taking advantage of abusing the US visa system for many years, let them pay from their huge profits. Great idea to get companies to pay for the services of taxpaying Americans that they refuse to hire, because they want cheap unqualified Indians. I'm sure Trump and company will have more tricks up their sleeves in the coming weeks.

The moral - Be careful what you wish for...you might just get it.

@a5

I have three thoughts, two serious and one funny:

1) The H1B abuse really started 15 years ago, which coincided with the Indians being the vast majority of H1Bs (they are 25% of L1s). They flooded the system. Who is responsible? You need 2 to tango, top American corporations working either directly or indirectly via SIs and/or outsourcing companies to get this done. Sometimes more than 1 relationship removed to make it more complex to detect.
2) American companies used to care about employee training, not the fake one we are having at IBM, but real continuous learning, working with universities, colleges to prepare solid plans to create American jobs etc. Unfortunately, they have facade "employee growth programs and plans" now, just for PR, marketing and to attract some people, or compliance only ("we are an organization that cares").

If American businesses wanted to look for solutions to provide job opportunities for their fellow Americans, it would happen. It's actually easy. Now, and this is where some of you may get mad, but I will say it anyone... During the pandemic and the tech bo-m, some people acting like prima donnas and they behaved entitles ("you are so lucky to have me"). Please don't get mad, but it's true. Some people did and gave corporations an excuse. That behavior doesn't help right now, because it keeps the excuse alive.

AND here comes my #3 and funny thought: Sure, IBM will spend $100K to bring new H1Bs, I'm sure AK still has some family, friends and neighbors to bring over!

No they won't.

They also won't hire Americans either.

They will find some other way to maintain profits and increase shareprice.

But H1B abuse needs fixing, even if it short term does not translate to American jobs coming back

H1B abuse is part of the story. There are foreign people worth 100K for companies to hire. But this extra fee won't work until companies like IBM can easily move jobs to India. Instead of hiring H1B, they will hire the same person in India !

There has always been some playing around the edges for the H1B program. In the 90’s semiconductor manufacturers hired H1B’s because they claimed they couldn’t find workers. There may have been some truth to that, but I suspect it was just an excuse to lower labor requirements, and yes all the semiconductor companies did it. We’re American universities not pumping out electrical engineers? I doubt it. The same has happened with consulting. Up the requirement for the skill you need imported, over subscribed the application process to guarantee a hiring visa, then hire at a very low labor rate as the excess falls to the bottom line. It’s a great business opportunity, that has been abused, and now the door is closing. (let the crying begin) Does the USA need H1B’s? Absolutely especially in speciality skills (eg healthcare where the domestic supply has been limited), BUT the abuse via consulting has run its course, and they are going to have to fall back to competing on local hires.

This only applies to newly h1Bs brought over here; therefore the millions of H1Bs already in America are safe;

The question could be asked of any company. And the answer is no. This effectively ends (or at least suspends) the H1-B visa program.
