Thread regarding Walgreens layoffs

JUST a matter of time.............

Sycamore Partners has replaced Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth with Mike Motz, who was previously the CEO of office retail store Staples, another Sycamore company.

“Under that CEO’s watch, Staples shuttered a third of its stores,” he said. “It cut tens of thousands of jobs. We’re wary that if Sycamore applies that same playbook to Walgreens, if that CEO that’s coming over from Staples applies that same playbook to Walgreens, we’re going to have … thousands of stores closed, tens of thousands of layoffs, pharmacy deserts in neighborhoods that are already struggling with access to medication.”

Well, check out the companies that Sycamore owns like the ann taylor/loft/chicos/talbots companies. They laid off asms in underperforming stores. I even saw a dm get laid off under loft in the nc region south.

Tim did exactly what he came to do. He didn't fail.

Tim came to 'turn the company around' and totally failed. He sold the company, pocketed millions and went back to retirement.

Walgreens decline started under Wasson's tenure but I'd say Roz presided over the company's worst period. Tim was a placeholder and prepped the company for sale as earlier posts stated.

@OP If it were you, would you continue to have Tim W run the company? Anyone with common sense know new leadership is needed. Tim presided over the worst period in Walgreens history.

It might happen. And yes layoffs seem inevitable. But will they close half the chain? Who knows? Pharmacy is not office supplies. They are totally different businesses.

Sycamore definitely has a methodology they follow, but to think it will be exactly the same as how they handled a clothing or office supply company is foolish.

Yes there will be some cuts. Yes there will be some RIFs. It's just of question of how deep.
