Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

When was the last time someone was laid off based on performance?

I honestly can’t remember. It’s always been about cost, nothing else. We’ve been shedding talent like crazy for years, and no amount of reorganization will ever redeem that.

@g4 you said it well. It’s pathetic.

I also know people who got laid off not this round but the one before who were on action plans so it is common.

Never based on performance, people leave and take their talent with them because they simply cannot cope with the rank incompetence of leadership. The rest get fired in every other round of ill informed cost saving layoffs.

@ed also acceptance of severance basically means you can’t sue. Hush money package if you feel wrongfully targeted/terminated during layoffs. Gives the corporation all around cover

HR trick is to include the performance based layoffs in the mass of the broader layoff to avoid the legal risk of terminating someone for cause. While yes it is at-will employment for most of us, it doesn't mean someone will not try and sue for termination, and proving that you are not firing for a protected cause is a time intensive and expensive process even if it's fully legitimate termination. Much easier to just say it's a layoff and give those people severence.

Remember JD? Was fired due to performance issues.

But because if the contract between Nike and JD, he moved on rather he was fired message.

@OP over like 26 years, seen it once and that was pretty much the guy "loud quitting".

Literally doing nothing for months.

It takes a LOT for some bizarre reason while yeah really solid employees get riffed with the wave of the hand whenever Bain or PWC needs some consulting hours.

@a2
i wonder if they create an action report during or after the firing
to give themselves legal cover

Some said to me the other day people were laid off because of performance issues but I thought that was crazy. Tons of talented people I know have been let go. Roles eliminated, got on the wrong side of someone who held a grudge, etc. often some of the most talented people have a point of view which means they might not always be well liked by someone who is knee deep in the political game. It’s crazy to think that Everyone let go had it coming and if you’re good at what you do you won’t be!

Probably the last time they manufactured anything in North America. Why have anyone here if you don't have factories here. All in Asia
