Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

We all deserve better

It is obvious they do not see us as people. I wish everyone here could leave at once because none of us should settle for this treatment.

Wow, hearing a whole lot of excuses for bad career and life decision making. Guess that's easier than accepting personal responsibility for anything.

"We all deserve better"

Right, because we all live in a world of fa----s, unicorns and elves, where everyone is entitled to live happily ever after.

I have that thing called bills that arrive every month. We do deserve better, however the job market is not great.. Most of us cannot afford to just up and leave.
Peace and love.

You need medical benefits. If you leave you have to find a new source

you 'deserve' to think long and hard about your employment and financial situation. While you are employed plan for the eventuality that one day you wont be, save, invest, dont spend $$ on stupid $hit, etc

I do agree that you can't expect loyalty from a corporation. But emotionally it is very different to be let go if you can understand why. Reasons like

  • You are underperforming or cause friction in the team
  • The product you work with has become less important or is cancelled
  • The team now needs people with a different skillset or experience
  • The company is in trouble economically and it is not enough to layoff consultants and those that perform less than you

Things like that, you can understand. It is a bit harder when it feels random. In a way you expect a company to have some sort of soul, even if a rather harsh and sometimes evil one. You don't expect to be nothing if the product sell well, you perform well and you are liked by everyone.

But you are right. You should always have in the back of your head that one day you might regret if you are "too loyal" to the company. It is a balance. Personally I would perform well even if the company is bad, to be able to look myself in the mirror and be proud of myself. I'm just that person.

At the end of the day, it’s just work. Don’t expect any company to treat you like a friend, and don’t think of your employer as family - it’s business. If you feel you’re not paid fairly for what you do, the right move is to change jobs, not to blame the employer for not treating you well. I know its tough. I'm also afraid of rifs. But you know... it is not your family.

Everyone would leave at once? Are there 169000 jobs out there?

For any large corporation the only thing that matters is the bottom line: money.
If you learn that as soon as possible, and learn that working harder does not mean you will rewarded better, you will be better off. You will be better prepared knowing you need to look after yourself, the company (any, not just Oracle) is never going to do that
