Then I noticed the top performers just got more work dumped on them. You get no extra pay, and all the extra stress. Now I do exactly what's in my job description while job hunting for something that actually values employees.

Here's a lesson for you. Leaders always want the best people to work for them. Be prepared to be used and exploited while the political spend their time selling your contributions as a result of their leadership.
