Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Recommend working at US Bank?

I have considered applying for some of the jobs in MN. Seeing the comments on this board is having me reconsider. Would anyone recommend applying for a job at this time?

I usually say "it depends" to these kind of questions but today I am confidently going to say NO!

Pay is good, everything else is not.

@fp In tech, the pay is middle of the road. It is not comparable to FAANG companies, it's more comparable to local "big fish in a small pond" businesses, companies that are typically national brands, but have headquarters in smaller cities. There's a good reason why USB has most workers in Ohio, Minnesota, North Carolina, and so on, and it's because they're not able to compete in places like New York, San Francisco, LA, and so on. Other companies doing RTO really is a boon to USB, it localizes those higher salaries that large tech companies and VC-backed startups to just a few labor markets that USB doesn't compete in.

In Richard Davis days, I would have said yes. I have no faith in current leadership, which also is outsourcing a lot of jobs to India and other overseas locations. Pay is definitely a good 30% less than what I could be making elsewhere based on my education and experience. I am thinking of jumping ship in the next 6-12 months. If I were you, I would only come work here as a last resort. That’s kinda what I did. Good luck.

Many people complaining about low pay....in tech the pay is fine. You are asked to do a lot though. Most new devs are coming in at level 14+.

If you wish to be miserable, disrespected, unhappy and rewarded with poor pay, this place is awesome.

If people are doing the bare minimum, maybe that says something about the failure of the bank to reward and motivate people to go above and beyond. When you remove incentive, you get bare minimum.

It’s a tough market right now. If you know someone at the bank, there are some great areas that function well. It’s stressful but pay for grades 14+ can be very competitive. Make sure to come in at the right salary though, it’s tough to fix later.

@OP yes, you should consider USB. Every publicly traded company (especially in financial services) is subject to layoffs without notice, but if you join one of the many profitable business lines, it’s a good place to work.
The people on this site openly routing for the bank’s demise or advising their peers to do the bare minimum will be your competition for advancement, so that’s a plus.

No, the pay is low. The benefits are a joke. Expensive health insurance for a sh---y plan. PTO is a joke. You start at 2 weeks. If you are not In ST Paul you do not matter to the company.

Worst case scenario, if any of the first four apply, OP can stay for a mere 6 to 12 months. Extract any value and immediately exit the dumpster. But in that case, an action plan should be made for the transition out so it is remains a stepping stone and not a stumbling block. Still a hard sell in my opinion.

Come here if:

  1. you need a paycheck
  2. plan to stay while searching for better
  3. want some “industry” exposure
  4. are at the start of your career (e.g 0-5 years)

Do not come here

  1. if you want to grow
  2. if you want to know how the best of the best do things
  3. you want to feel valued
  4. you are a self starter who is ambitious

Did I forget anything folks?

It’s really rough here right now. Morale is very poor, the management is mostly awful, and depending on the department you work in, things are directionless. The people are generally nice (to your face at least), but even then I’ve seen the nicest and most accomplished workers have turned sour after years of abuse. If you look at this as a paycheck only, then perhaps this would work for you. But if you have a shred of integrity, morale or career drive right now, I would avoid if possible.

Steer clear of us bank if it is the only correct decision you make.
