Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

TPS Targets

So in our morning briefing today, I was able to look at the approved structures for TPS only and the target reductions for the BUs. Yes their are targets. I dont know why leaders have to lie about it.

TPS looks like a cut of 25% up from 20% last week but I did not get to count the total number compared to today's numbers.

  • ABU target is 20%
  • CNAEP
  • GOM target is 20%
  • MCBU target is 15%
  • SJV target is 25%
  • CBU target is 25%
  • CPP target is 25%
  • Shipping is 25%
  • DS&C target is 20%

The interesting part is that these numbers don't add up. The overall target for CNAEP is a range of 20% to 25%. With the numbers above, we will not hit 20% because most of the population is in MCBU and GOM. I am guessing we will include the AMBU numbers.

The international numbers range from 10% to 25% based on your region. There is a lot of work to be done between now and June when the majority of employees will feel the heat.

Make no mistake, Mike has already provided a target number. It is unfortunate that our leaders don't want to share so here it is for your review.

All these strongly-worded posts is all tough talk but in reality most could not back any of it up in person without the pampering corporate initiatives and their managerial mama bears to look after them. I hope they cut this organization down to only those who are absolutely needed. If I get cut as well so be it, I throw my hat in the ring just like all the others. It is high time for the spurs to hit the flanks and get on with it. Leaders make your choices and cull the herd hard, we need fat steaks on the grill. Cowboy up.

The moderators are earning their pay on this board. Any post that sheds an unfavorable light on current practices are being removed. Clear demonstration that big brother is watching and wishes to silence dissenting voices which might offer opinions contrary to the public narrative regardless of that opinion's relevance, candor or sincerity.

Funny how those who tender a rebuttal one person's earnest assessments of current practices have no facts within their replies or well reasoned arguments. But rather toss out trite turnabout remarks or blathering on how everything is rosy and its just the way things are now. According to some, the world is just as it should be and we all just need to be good little worker bees because obviously others know what is best for us, their judgement is beyond reproach and our organization is flawless. Yes, we should all be working hard and doing our best to contribute, 100% agree. But we should also be able to voice our opinion professionally, courteously and without any intended malice on a public forum without being censored by corporate operatives.

A platform for fair discourse includes the viewpoints of many and will likely represent a variety of perspectives. When the layoff board becomes yet another heavily censored forum, it should be clear to all of us that freedom of opinion is but a thin concept now relegated to hushed whispers behind closed doors. I also agree that some push things too far, such as naming persons or vulgar language, etc. However if the post expresses neither corporate slander nor blatant lies, no one should remove it based on their opinion of its validity or potential impact. This is just another step toward a world where independent thought is suppressed, alternative viewpoints are disallowed and conformity is mandated. Sad times indeed.

The person who doesn't get it that they have to put their nose to the grindstone, get the job done and work hard for a living instead of always whining and complaining about petty things like some woman or minority got as good or better job than them is the pathetic coward, no one else.

The news article about the ABU layoffs said the memo referred to a target of 20% to 30%. So, maybe add 10% to all these estimates to get your worst case scenario for each area.

"The age of the female" and "just put our head downs and work"; what a load of horse@#$%. No integrity, no pride, no accountability, and certainly no sense of actual equality or fair play. Anyone who feels like this is both a coward and clearly undeserved of any position considered to be leadership. If this is how Chevron leadership wants to run this organization, it is both shameful and misguided.

I am in OC and I do have to applaud HES for leaning forward and putting females into leadership roles. I had a hard conversation with several men in HES on some selections where they were clearly the most qualified and would have been very successful but they do not realize we do have metrics for many reasons. My hardest conversations have been the selections on the D&C HES Manager and the LABU HES Manager. These individuals are marked as future leaders. We need to get them exposure in several areas so that they can make good decisions when they are executives. They are not intended to know anything about the job they are going into. They are expected to learn as much as they can in 18 to 24 months and then move into some new. Give them a break and let them learn and hopefully, they will be great leaders one day. We are in the age of the female and need to accept and just put our heads down and work.

JKQ - I do agree with you. I was on college recruiting and for what few jobs we had, we hired 3 females to every 1 male.

With current CEO, expect nothing but cuts, even last year at the begining of summer job interviews it was very clear internally that very limited positions are available, let alone this year and under current conditions there is nothing bit significant cuts to 3nsure dividend payout is uninterrupted.

Nice try, troll, but these cuts will be less than 2015 for most BUs. Probably 10-15%. Oil is forecast to be $40 next year and Chevron wants to be in a position to get after it. We don’t have a lot of extra staff at the moment.

I don’t know if this will be the worst lay-off ever for Chevron, but it sounds like it will be right up there. In 1992 ~15% was laid off company wide with the biggest percentage coming from the US BU’s. Good luck to you all.

@1jcb as soon as oil gets over $35 / bbl you will see a new round of empire building at CVX and the number of employees will surge again like it always does. There will be a couple of years of good times, well better times than now then another crash. When that crash comes, then more layoffs will happen.

For some reason Chevron never seemed to think layoffs were that good of an idea until the 2014 crash. Now it's the first lever to pull - wonder why?

@ocu+14Q7YjqK

Anecdotally, I know three 5-10 year employees that have left Chevron in the last month. One was in AMBU, but the other 2 were voluntary. They got hired in 2014/15 and Chevron doesn't exactly seem like the most stable workplace in their experience.

The BU's can recommend all they want, but at the end the input will likely be used for validation purposes. Remember, the driver here is to sustain the dividend, no matter what the cost. Rest assured, the targets will be adjusted a couple of % points up to be on the safe side.

Everyone on Capital Projects (starting with supporting roles such as former PRC, AIR, SCM, etc...) have a target painted on their backs. GOM is another one that will be hit hard, lot's of redundancies for very few ventures. Expats will either be gone or repatriated, they are under the magnifying glass.

With everybody in stampede mode to Ops, it will be interesting to see how many true relationships will survive.

If all that digital pixie dust doesn’t start panning out, you can add a few more percent to TPS before the end of the year.

In 2016 Chevron cut 8000 employees, 12% of total workforce. Here we are just 4 short years later and Chevron will cut many thousands more. Maybe 8-12k. This is crazy. How is that fancy new house you bought 2,3,4 years ago? And that nice new car you bought recently?

Halliburton, Schlumberger, NOV and Baker Hughes (and a bunch smaller outfits) had horrible two weeks - on average they were cutting about 25% of the total headcount.

It's just a matter of time when this horrible wave of cuts catches up with us and our competitors/peers. I'd say that TPS is looking at 20 to 25 percent cut (this aligns with the post OP shared) - this will be like nothing we've ever seen before.

Good luck all...

ETC, PRC and ITC are part of TPS, the OP said the overall target for TPS is now 25% up from 20%.

This will be severe across the board. Out of ~45,000 employee enterprise wide somewhere between 7,500 to 10,000 will be laid off. Sad times indeed. Good luck everyone.

It also appears HES will be one of the hardest hit functions. When the rubber meets the road HES gets left on the curb.
