Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Meets Vs. Exceeds

Did anyone get an "Exceeds Expectations" on their review. It seems that everyone no matter how often you exceed expectations still gets a meets. Is it even possible to get an exceeds at Centene?

I worked here for about 10 yrs as a people leader. I can tell you the determination of your performance rating is often established prior to the completion of you writing your performance review. For ratings above “meets” requires an explanation. It’s very rare if anyone in the organization receives a “significantly exceeds”.
As far as compensation, the final decision on compensation may be subject to changes made by upper management after the initial evaluation by people leaders. People leaders sometimes aren’t aware this happens. This lack of influence over the ratings and compensation can be challenging for people leaders who strive to recognize and reward their team members based on their performance and contributions. Unfortunately, that’s the corporate world!

I was laid off in December 2023 after over 7 years of service, but I used to joke all the time that I could be the second coming of Jesus Christ and still get a "meets expectations" review. I was given all of my supervisor's training responsibilities one year (much to the detriment of my mental health, and was not allowed to use my earned PTO to recover), but still was not given the "exceeds expectations" recognition. In fact, I was torn down by my supervisor and made to cry during that annual evaluation review. Good riddance Centene, can't say I miss you one bit...

You say it should be rare to get an "Exceeds". The problem is - exceeds is not the top rating. "Significantly Exceeds" is the top rating. So I might agree that the very top should be less common (but still not rare), Exceeds should be relatively common - at least in parts of the review - maybe not the overall score.

Nobody cares how hard you work, the only thing that matters is the result. Doesn’t matter if you say you worked so hard when the other person solved your problem in a couple hours

"Must be nice to be a non production employee that gets a bonus off the work of those on production." You must be joking. I work extremely hard and earn my merit and bonus each year. And no, not all M level are salaried. You really shouldn't make generalizations about things you really don't know.

How would you know what this person does or doesn't know? Sounds like your one of the people taking credit & earning bonuses off the work of your colleagues just based off this comment you made. Go ahead and get mad if it will make you feel better.

Why at this point anyone would want to exceed is beyond me. They made it clear that no matter how well you do that you will get nothing back for your efforts. Motivation and incentive means a lot. Most people wouldn't work if they didn't have bills to pay - hence motivation and incentive. Exceeding at this point just gives them reason to raise the CPH and give you more and more work.

Exceeds should be very rare. If someone has been getting that regularly on the same team and in the same/similar role, I would wonder if that people leader is truly raising the bar on the team or if the goals are truly a reach for that team member. It should be a challenge if not relatively difficult to get to that rating.

I just want to add that you don't call your team "girls". Your entire post is demeaning, but that throws it over the top. Do better. Be better.

@4ekw+1r5SeN2h - spoken like a true mediocre manager not a leader. You need new role models.

Only a VERY small portion of employees like < 5% will be rated 'Exceeds' since merit raises and bonus have to be ramped up.

VAST majority like 90% of employees who exceed or attempt to exceed will only get 'meets' and maybe bottom 5% would get 'not meets' rating.

Finally someone admitting what goes on. Raises, evaluations and everything else including promotions is a joke to this leadership.

For every PL and Manager who previously stated that people were NOT arbitrarily chosen for lay-off because they were not chosen that way.

PLEASE SEE WHAT THE MANAGER ADMITTED TO BELOW.

Encourage, if not penalize, staff to complete a self-evaluation with the intention to scrutinize and punish them when they do.

Easy layoff target? Wow! Glad to know how Centene feels about the employees.

Wow. You do know what the words "exceeds expectations" means, right? It means the expectations are set forth by your management team, and then you have exceeded them. If someone works their butts off to exceed their metrics over the last year, they've earned the right to say so. The fact that you would specifically target those who work hard and are successful shows how petty you are and how much you should not be in a management position. I feel sorry for your team. Not only will they not be compensated for a job well done. They will be punished for it, as well.

You, my friend, need to seriously self-evaluate.

Hate to say it but when it comes to self-evals you're never as good as you think you are. If someone on my team (and frankly it's most of them) think they're entitled to an Exceeds - I've got an easy layoff target to work with. They're not hungry anymore and are happy with their output - and stopped growing. The people who mark themselves as Meets will enter my Inner Circle - these are the girls who know they left something on the table and are striving to improve.

This is the first year I have ever got meets expectations in a review. I did get numerous exceeds expectations in the individual categories. We were told that leadership was given direction to not give out exceeds expectations unless it was an edge case where the individual was to be promoted. I was also told they were using this as a mechanism to lower expectations for annual raises. All of it is a game to minimize costs as much as possible.

I am trying to understand if it is really because our stars numbers are so low which is impacting our revenue or that we are trying to make the books look as good as possible. Either way they have totally ki-led morale and I suspect the productivity levels of the remaining team members are getting worst because of it.

I got my annual review where it was half assed with marking everything as “meet expectations” just to rush into 2024 goals on the same meeting and write pure nonsense

Isn't M and up salaried? If so then they are still getting bonuses while the rest of us are not no matter how well we performed. Must be nice to be a non production employee that gets a bonus off the work of those on production. Also must be nice that production employees have to be 80% available (whatever the he-l that means never mind how they measure it) while non production employees only have to be 60% available - so yeah - sc--wing the people that actually work I'd say.

I have gotten an exceeds every year since I have worked here. My annual review showed that I exceeded across the board for 2023 but when you look at what was submitted its "meets". Its not they can't - its that they don't want to give the honest metric because Centene no longer wants to give out bonus's to us lowly workers. This company is a joke.

I “got exceeds” from my manager but they said they have to “get permission” from upper management to officially give it to me…not that it matters, the raises are a joke!

It literally make little to no difference in the end. I was a significantly exceeds and then laid off that same year.
