Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

UK expats on the block?

How can we justify having UK expats in Houston during a massive layoff? I get it, the base salary is roughly 70% of US payroll at the same PSG. However, when you add up the other benefits of UK payroll (eg. car allowance, 20+% contribution to pension scheme, and monthly stock share grants), the cost to company is about the same as a US payroll employee... If that person were in the UK (it's actually higher when you factor employer tax).... but they always complain about their salaries being lower...Since operated assets are sold and NOJV is being sold, only remaining option was CTC Aberdeen but with ENGINE that is going away so basically it is expat or nothing.

Now you bring them to the US as an expat throw in 10% salary premium, goods and services allowance (few grand a month depending on family size), HUE, annual trips, all of which is tax equalized.... Now it becomes completely unjustified... especially when there is nothing in the UK to return to and particularly during a downsizing situation.

I get it SOME are high performers, but it is about the same proportion and US employees. If there were any common sense you get rid of UK payroll entirely, eliminate the deadwood, and the ones worth keeping should be switched to US or US global offshore payroll. This will save some serious $$ as it will no longer be so lucrative which of course would result in natural attrition. Yes, it may be a relatively small number of people affected, but every BU needs to do their part, right?

@5rpi Many people are saying if it isn't Scottish, it's cr-p. Thus they stay to run the company.

When we exited Indonesia there were many talented locals who could have been brought over to the US, same with Thailand, but that seemed almost impossible to do.

But, for the Brit’s they are the proviged lot, they got expated to the US and now they hang around like barnacles on a rusty ship.

It’s almost like they have some magic hold over the (largely) American management

Worked with many Brits over the years both here in the U.S. and overseas. Found them great to work and party with (especially the Scots). Perhaps we should keep them and let go those who seem to spend a considerable amount of their time complaining on this forum…

Get a grip. Across the ENTIRE company there are about 400 expat Brit’s. In the US many of the Brit’s are US payroll.

OP here. Yes! Forgot about that. Not sure why company covers private school for expats in the US. I got when expats go overseas to some s--hole where there are no other options, but in Houston schools are good... especially in the burbs.

"Forgot to add the cost of top notch private school…i.e. The Village or Awty. $30K per kid per year."

There is a longstanding vibe of perceived favoritism towards UK expats... Resentment... I get that every company has its own policies, but when layoffs come around, it’s tough not to feel like decisions might be influenced by payroll status, home office alighnment, rather than merit and/or performance. With the industry being so unpredictable right now, it’s certainly understandable that everyone is on edge about job security and I get the resentment. This was even so when the times were good tho.

Placing some (but not too many) US employees in key international locations helps Chevron - our global interests are protected this way... Yet... it seems counterproductive to host a large number of foreign nationals in the US indefinitely. Regardless of their country of origin (UK, Canada, Kazakhstan, to name a few), these long-term expats often are pay well aboive salaries that Americans get (double??), it's not fair and it's, at best, horrible resource allocation.

Its easy. UK expats are like cockroaches and always have been. They will survive. Its only US based US payroll people who ever get a bad deal
