Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Why do you think you are PIPed?

I usually hear from people that they think they were PIPed not because of their actual performance but because of animosity from their boss.

Every member of my project team has been PIP'd in succession over thae past few years. Regardless of feedback received. Regardless of ongoing progress. Supervisor decides on a victim, then constructs a narrative around it, taking comments out of context and refusing to be corrected. PIP "required actions" are less than what employees were already doing. At the end of the year: "what an improvement! I helped get my team back on track!". It's not animosity- it's creating a problem in order to look good. What a waste of effort.

@4ycw You’d last a week working at one of his companies, assuming you could even get hired.

As to WFH, it’s a perk being extended by employers to seasoned professionals, often in lieu of higher salaries. I successfully negotiated “work from anywhere” as a condition of my employment. I’ll be flying to the Azores with my laptop next month and to Barcelona in January. Not sure where I’ll be going after that. Perhaps Marseille or Tangier.

Enjoy your commute through Houston traffic at 7AM.

There has been a concerted push to use the PIP program a lot more this year. I think Musk will make it even more common. Too much deadwood. Weed out the quiet quitters and work from Homers.

Once you are PIPed, it’s not long before you are POPed. Kudos to Chevron for growing a spine after so many years of over-tolerance. If you’re not good enough to hold the job you get paid to do, then shape up or ship out.

The vast majority of people that I know who were on a PIP plan weren’t cutting it, and probably would have just been cut at other companies. But I do know of a few who were also on PIP that didn’t deserve it.

It doesn't matter the reason - the specific requirements for improvement must be objectively spelled out in the PIP. It can't read "must please boss before Christmas". It should say "deliver 20 widgets per week meeting quality standards", or "arrive to work before 9am, stay until 4pm in attire according to written dress code every single day", or "never get caught sleeping at desk again".

That is probably closer to the truth. In an era where meritocracy is maligned; corruption and favoritism reign supreme. Keep going down this road. Soon we will be Venezuela.
