What happens in 10 years when half of SF retires?

Im in a tech department that you would think would have a slightly younger work force.

not the case, everyone I work with is 50+. and we are only replacing these older employees with a handful of interns who are converted to full time every year. I wonder how many interns receive offers and decline them because they dont want to waste their 20s living in Bloomington.

Seems like SF is going to run into mass retirement issues in the next 10 years, but who knows maybe we will all be outsourced by then, or SF will finally move HQ to a more desirable place to live in order to attract new talent.

Well State Farm has quietly opened a Guatemalan call center. Bet you didnt know that. Also they are super openly and aggressively trying to program out the need for american humans. Most of legacy State Farm already retired or left so what we see now is the result of "the other half retiring" . Turn and burn workforce was the plan, and what weve been for about a decade now. What happens when the next batch retires? Replaced with low skill people who might stay 6 months, might stay a year, but unlikely past that. We already are a workforce of new hires who are poorly trained, and that will continue. We just had to follow our competitors, which is an odd path for the dominant insurance company out there, follow your inferior competitors, but now were that and no different from any other insurance company, and on many levels, significantly worse.

Give it 10-15 years and the people leaving wont be rehired unless its offshore or AI takes over with a program babysitter vs 50 people working.

Our work force is getting older because the young ones are not loyal to companies anymore. They canceled themselves out and AI is gonna replace all the cancel culture people. Yeah AI will never have to go to the bathroom or fiddle for the car keys or go to the can or have kids to talk about them all day or walk the dog or sleep or eat or fa-t or live in an apartment their entire young adulthood because of a fear of commitment because It just works all day.

Systems will become more stable, downtime probably gets cut to a fraction of what it is now.

Between now and then, AI will likely have evolved to the point where they won’t be needed anyway. Many of those folks are probably just hoping they’re still needed until they’re financially ready to retire.

I disagree with OP's premise as well. When the IT jobs were concentrated in Bloomington employees were more connected to State Farm. They could live in an area with relatively low housing costs, while making more than most other local companies could pay. The pension also bound people to SF. That's why you work with so many in their 50s.

Moving IT workers to the hubs opened up the talent pool, but it also opened up opportunities to leave. And no pension for new hires removed a reason for people to ride out rough patches. State Farm is just another employer now.

I disagree with your premise. SF has gotten rid of the pension, are middle of the road with pay, why do you think being in big cities would solve these problems? In those big hub cities, SF isn’t special, doesn’t pay well and jobs are very easy to find for people that leave.
