Is talent ranking a new thing started in last several years? Did not know it existed before 2023.

Stack-ranking/Ballmer-era Microsoft style rank and yank can result in some strange outcomes depending on what org unit the stack encompasses, but anyone that is at or above mediocre within their org still doesn't need to worry about RIFs unless their entire team happens to get cut; even then they keep the ones they like. Year-end feedback is irrelevant, but year-round informal feedback and vibes are absolutely not.

If your feedbacks are good you shouldn't worry, ha that's kind of sweet. I wish I hadn't seen what I've seen over the years, I wish I lived in that world again.

Not necessarily true... Tdp happens after talent ranking, last year I exceeded my goals, got stellar feedback, but was talent ranked in the gutter. When I asked in a clear professional way I was told in no uncertain terms that talent ranking is confidential and I shouldn't know about it, they then got mad at me and tried to pressure me into telling them who told me. Still no explanation. However, riffs and bonuses are solely based off normalized talent ranking.

@48e Seriously what are you expecting? Do you think someone is so stupid to post a screenshot a message here and get fired? If you are receiving bad feedbacks prep for a layoff does not matter when it is happening, if your feedbacks are good, you should not worry if it is a regular, yearly layoff.

@4g0 some people were told in March 2025 that their time would end in June, others were let go the day of the announcement.

@4h4 Yes it’s for US only. None for Canada

@4gg WARN Act Compliance Assistance | U.S. Department of Labor
The WARN Act requires most U.S. employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days’ advance notice of plant closings or mass layoffs to protect workers, their families, and communities.

@OP I did a bit of research and there are ways to not have to have a WARN notice filed. If not considered a permanent or mass layoff. I guess we will find out by March 4th.

@4gg so a warn notice procedure is when HR gives 1st warning, 2nd and thrn at the 3rd one, they give you a notice period for your dismissal

What is warn notice? I thought they directly fire on that without any notice.. can someone explain?

@4g0 cuts were communicated internally on the 26 March 2025, I remember because some of my valued colleagues were impacted, specifically those who had remote working agreements. I didn't ask precisely when they found out l, but it may have been that day.

@4ev

So in March 2025 Morgan Stanley announced 2000 cuts and the WARN notice was given on the 26th March for 250 employees (giving 90 days notice) with the actual layoffs starting in June. Maybe its semantics but did they let you go in March when you stopped working or in June when they legally terminated your employment?

@previous poster most of the warn notices for the 2025 layoffs were filed beforehand, i checked the database

@4cv

The warn notice usually happens after the event as the impacted are officially still on the pay role for a while.

@OP where is the WARN notice?

@4bc Sadly I agree, it is usually done on secret talent rankings that have nothing to do with year end feedback, with the "1s" being cut, and interestingly, in the UK that is actually in violation of HR law. The role has to be cut, not the person. They get around it by not allocating any formal job roles in the first place, so that they can cut the person based off if their management chain likes them or not, which is why diversity and the gender pay gap is so bad. Any complaints are apparently met with them suggesting that they will withold any redundancy payout over statutory.

@49h

Typically its based on the Talent Rankings that are done each year though often with tweaks to account for teams that are over/under staffed.

Just curious about how the layoff list is determined before submitting to HR. Is the MD of each team making the list or depends on team.

@48e If you're afraid of layoffs when working an ok paying white-collar job you've lost before they even start

whoever are commenting mysterious sentences like “it’s happening” or “those who know, know” etc… you people are literally the source of fear and anxiety for most hardworking employees. Stop acting like a main character in your own silly life and provide evidence and reason.

Not sure where the information is coming from that there’s gonna be a layoff between the end of February to March 2026 because articles that I’ve been reviewing online show that the layoff information was based off of 2025 if somebody could provide me with some information where there are supposed to be layoffs in 2026 I’d appreciate it.
