Thread regarding TIAA (TIAA-CREF) layoffs

Could Paper Right be the end of Thasunda?

Nothing good will come from our hip hop single but maybe that

I am an investor in TIAA. Have been for decades. This is a waste of our money. TIAA is not a social causes company. Invest my money wisely. Stop wasting it on absurdities.

Nobody invested monetarily at TIAA needs to shut up about misuse of their assets. Go away shut up.

Send the WSJ or NYT an email telling them this is a great story.

The marketing agencies creating this should be fired but they are all in it for the money....aka The Martin Agency. Just completely inappropriate for a 100+ year company. I can understand wanting to be more relevant and keep up with the changing times but this has gone so far out of control that there is no coming back.

She is going to keep going until she has hit Oprah status

Every so often, a seemingly weird marketing campaign that doesn't seem to make any business sense is the sign of a visionary genius who is so far out ahead of the pack that nobody can appreciate their 4-dimensional chess moves.......but more often than not, it's the hallmark of a fool given more authority and money than he or she knows how to handlewhile running what's left of a failing business into the ground.

I'm just comin' off of section eight
It cut deeper than a razor blade
They let me hang for days
You know it's up 'cause I saved the date (uh-huh)
Financial freedom is so fulfillin'
Generational wealth is what you show the children
I'm in my righteous rhythm, from commentin', I got the right to pin 'em (I got the right to, uh)

As a black man, I find this attempt at social virtue signaling insulting. I save and invest and fund my 401K, but I can assure you it isn't because I listened to some vapid hip-hop gibberish that rhymes. I didn't learn personal finance from someone off the streets named "Pusha". I listened to educated college professors in Economics, History, Finance and Calculus.

Thasunda, you could have saved a lot of money and hired the actors from the Jefferson's to reprise their intro song "Movin' On Up" and it would have been less insulting. Some vagrant named Pusha T??? Really??? What in the He-l does HE know about personal finance, debt management, tax management, economic freedom or Investment allocation? BOO.

Clearly, we have a young inexperienced CEO who is starstruck for a different world than financial services. This is something she should conduct on her own time and her own dime. This is not a market that currently exists. She could corner the market on the "Section 8" retirement savings mentioned in the song and it would have no profitable effect on TIAA or it's current participant OWNERS. There is no young rapper market share in the world of academia. It is the height of stupidity on so many levels. Just a bizarre waste of time and resources at a firm that cannot afford to lose either. I know Thasunda has rationale behind this, but its bologna. She did it because she starstruck with her new job and huge income and wants get her "Paper Right" with the cool crowd.

I think Wyclef and Pusha should do webinars on financial planning and meet with plan participants next. Since they are our new financial advisors and all. I bet they won’t like the sh---y VC or comp. Oh snap! Just make them over paid advisors or better yet, Just add them to the Exec Leadership team for a few million and then some. Problem solved! invite them to our Town Hall meetings too!

Dear Plan Sponsor, we have no clue wtf we are doing anymore but we are sure as sh-t are going to pay people millions to sing about it! Maybe we can have a Broadway show. I see it now….the vision is a Trifecta! The Grammy, the Tony and the Oscar for best performance of a CEO. It’s you T! Get ready for the selfies and red carpet!

someone stopped guzzling the koolaid long enough to wag their finger and tell us we should be ashamed and grateful. One of the greatest CEOs in our history was African American and he wasn’t perfect but he was HUMBLE and no drama and an intellectual with a vision. So put your finger down. She’s under fire here because she’s done a sh-t job. Period.

To the anonymous poster below.. . It has nothing to do with racism, we loved Roger cause he was a good leader. Thasunda is a horrible absent leader and the executives under her don’t care about their employees.

I think we all need to take a step back and focus more on gratitude. We all at the very least are employed and can put food on our families plates.

Things could be a whole lot worse.

T, like everyone else, isn’t perfect, but I’m not a fan of this subtle racism thrown at her on this thread or any other anonymous forum.

Reminds me of this video of where policies might be creating unintended consequences.

I used to be proudly associated with TIAA, but ever since T came on board everything has gone down hill. I am now embarrassed for so many reasons.

“Snap snap! Delight!”

WHERE IS THE BOARD?!

We are (should be) a respected financial services company. This is a slap in the face to communities who need real assistance, they don’t need a vague corporate song that flops.

By the way, Ally Bank did the same thing last year and it flopped. Do we not learn anything from our competitors or is T that far up her own @$$?

Where is the Board. There is no confidence with this leadership team. Remove them all. Bring back RWF until you find a qualified candidate and don’t make decisions based on race or gender. And fire the rest of her tribe because they are wasting time and money and distracting us from the real work that needs to be done.
Where is the Board.
No one respects her or the team. No one wants to work for them. They don’t value anyone. The culture is gone.
Where is the Board.

I don't know if we are really seeing the whole picture here guys? According to T's Instagram account, things are WAY more than just peachy keen at work and in her free time!!! The MLK Day post is her speaking over video and sound from Martin Luther King's historic Washington D.C., I Have A Dream speech. I'm speechless that her astonishing vanity apparently knows no bounds. I'm sure TIAA paid for production of this special nugget too!

I watched part of, what I could stomach of the so call song, term used loosely. Thanks Thasunda, for validating and giving credit to all of the typical stereotypes associated with black people.
As a black woman, who was never on food stamps nor ever lived in the ghetto or projects, am totally mortified at what you have so thoughtlessly created.

It’s hard enough to deal with people making incorrect assumptions about me, my life, and my finances based on my race. And now you, a black woman of purported power, goes and does this??

There are truly no words.

Thasunda should forfeit her bonus along with her ridiculous team. The only ones responsible for the financial results of TIAA are we the employees. How do we share this with the Board? Mind you the Board Chair previously ran Weight Watchers. This is what we are dealing with folks. We have people left right and on top who do not come from our understand the world we were created to serve. Oh and Delight. It’s a we thing!! Double snap!

LMAO — what a waste! TIAA now the biggest joke in retirement industry. This ridiculousness does nothing to help anyone retire in equality when Tashunda and team are robbing from the TIAA employees (women, men, black, white and brown) the people who aren’t getting compensation so she can get her own paper right. This company hasn’t cared about people for years it’s just been a buncha not very bright FIDO greedies lining their pockets and buying them beach houses at the expense of everyone else’s secure retirement. This CEO is a sell out for the paper. Take the package and run!!!

Let’s not forget how they just quietly and nonsensically decided to spend millions of dollars on the subtlest of rebranding! Now the logo has 2 colors. Wow. There’s nothing like wasting money on all of these ridiculous efforts and then acting surprised when we are way over budget. Of course, the employees are the ones who have to suffer from all of those bad decisions.

Does anyone know what we can do about Thasunda and the EC? The blatant misuse of funds, ruining the company’s reputation, turning their backs in the employees. Can we raise an issue with the board? Should we sent letters to all of the institutions letting them know what is going on? Can shareholders call a vote to oust her?

What are our legitimate options?

Has this ever happened before? Where a financial services company, let alone any company, hired an artist to make a song? Did TIAA pay Wyclef Jean to create this song? I’m still confused on how TIAA fits into all this. I didn’t know they performed this song on Jimmy Fallon until I read it here.

Look at her leadership team turnover since she’s been at TIAA. She’s run off almost all of her direct reports. Some complained about the hostile work environment and were given a package to silence them.

In 30 years, the long term performance plan has not gone negative…until T arrived. Others before her took care of employees, even if the company had a bad year. Perhaps it wouldn’t have gone negative had she not spent money so recklessly doing things like this. Now no raises and the worst bonuses ever? High performers will not stay. Do something before it’s too late TIAA!

What recourse do we have as employees? Can we start a petition to the Board? We should be holding them accountable as well. They are failing this company.

What’s been done by T isn’t just in bad taste and bad business, it’s ethically corrupt. As a steward of participant money, she has failed miserably. She needs to be held accountable by the board or else the board is complicit in wasting hundreds of millions of dollars of participant money.

T has done nothing to promote or innovate TIAA. Her agenda is her own. I am disgusted to the point I don’t even go on LinkedIn anymore. It’s embarrassing to say I work here. Our competitors are laughing at us. Roger is saying WTF did I do leaving this company in her hands. Everyone she hires is saying who the F is TIAA? I don’t know maybe we can just do smoke and mirrors BS on rap songs and dresses and we will get big bonuses because we are showing how hip we are. Consultants are laughing at us.

We are not winning at all. We are scraping by praying she goes and takes everyone with her.

Thasunda will have last laugh. If Board doesn’t renew her contract she gets millions in a payoff anyway. Another slap to our participants and employees.

Did anyone notice that when S. Woodroffe left there was no big fanfare like there usually is for someone of his stature in the hierarchy. No farewell social gathering in the Atrium, no clap-out, no nothing.

Could it be he saw the writing on the wall and decided he wanted no parts of the clown show? Everyone is absolutely correct, when is the last time anyone's seen T in the room with the rest of the EC at the SITK calls. If you're honest with yourselves, you know she's a self-absorbed, tone deaf, ABSENT "leader".

On the other hand, if you're a card carrying member of the WOKE brigade, you probably think she's superb. In that case, I pity you..........and you deserve whatever her tragic facade of a "leadership" eventually bestows upon you (i.e. full RTO, abysmal raises/bonuses, layoffs etc) .

What a travesty and shame this once great company has become. #SinkingShip

I’m not sure what is worse: the lyrics, the message, or the terrible marketing attempt by TIAA.

  • Aesthetically, as a song it su-ks and is flat and bland.
  • Lyrically, the message is paradoxical (Are we spending or saving money?)
  • From a marketing perspective… What are the results? How much AUM will this bring us? I’m guessing MUCH LESS than we spent on it.

Sad thing is Thasunda did have the potential and energy to be a great CEO. She fell flat because she could not measure up to the thought leadership and executive presence of every other TiAA CEO that came before her. She catered to her social interests and causes. TIAA is not a social activist organization. We are a financial services organization and our CEO should present herself as such. I wonder if she even knows what’s really happening in the organization she leads she barely attends her own executive meetings and never takes questions.

It’s not a ‘we’ thing it’s a ‘me’ thing!
Me, me, me!
Here is where our money went this year:

  • CEOs sorority convention
  • Martha, Martha, Martha I lost count
  • Dresses, sneakers, rap songs oh my
  • high profile events, yes!
  • corporate Jet, sure why not?

Spend spend spend!
Pay your employees and value them ? Not on the list
Sc--w them on their long term performance bonus? Why not. She needs the money to spend recklessly on the things that matter to her not our participants or clients.
