Coming here super frustrated. I was part of the 10/20 RIF and just received an email notifying me that my last severance would be deposited later this month. I have looked non stop for jobs (including applying for nearly 10 at Elevance) and very few leads with the exception of one which won’t be hiring for a few more months. How is everyone else from the 10/20 RIF holding up?

@dyjc+1qrqNsVJ Yes and also there are hiring frosts/freezes in place. Plus the number of open positions is so much smaller than the number of RIF'd individuals.
@dyjc+1qrqNsVJ "After RIFF, I did apply back at Anthem just to test a theory. With over 15 years experience, and excellent background, I wanted to see if i even got a call.
No call. No interviews."
I wondered about that. After hearing the terms of redeployment, I decided not to even bother. We were told if we didn't accept an offered position, we would not receive SUB (so-called severance) at all. That means we could be offered a "comparable" position that paid up to 40% less than what we were making. So either accept that or get nothing. I'll take my 26 weeks of SUB and be glad I'm off a sinking ship.

Seems like once you are RIFF, no returns.
My husband got laid off in the Sept round after almost 15 years with Anthem. He has had zero luck finding another position with thousands of resumes and applications submitted but not even an interview. It’s an extremely difficult job market out there…the worst I’ve seen in 25 years.
I’m a casualty of the 10/20 RIF and I am still trying to find employment. It’s been frustrating and depressing. My sub payments ended toward the end of December, so just getting $500 unemployment income weekly now. Hoping my luck changes soon.
" 54% of USA adults have a literacy below a sixth grader. This is why foreign workers
who are highly educated are brought into USA to do the math and science jobs. "
The total number of math jobs in the US is 35,600.
https://www.bls.gov/ooh/math/mathematicians-and-statisticians.htm
You don't really need 100% of the US population to fill a total of 35,600 jobs. Each year
we reserve 80,000 math and science jobs for H1B. It is pushing out American citizens.
You are at a severe deficit of new math and science jobs than the number of qualified
American citizens.
Not entirely accurate. The limit is 85,000 (65,000 new visas, 20,000 visas for people who have received their Masters Degree from a U.S. school). Of course, spouses could increase the final number of workers who come. That's not just math and science. The H-1B website states it can be any highly specialized occupation in fields such as "architecture, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, medicine and health, education, business specialties, accounting, law, theology, and the arts". Obviously, IT is a big part of that. In practice, they don't enforce the "highly specialized" part. There are countless low and mid-level network admins getting H-1B's.
I'm just making the point that it is far, far greater than 35,600.
I'm not anti-H1B but I do wish they would aggressively enforce the rules and raise the minimum salary requirements. The minimum salary is set at $60K for a "highly specialized" occupation? Right. At least by allowing H-1B visas, we're keeping the jobs here so we can compete, albeit at lower salaries than we should be at. Eliminate H-1B's and you'll see the jobs go offshore.
Bottom line: H-1B's shouldn't be phased out until the U.S. finds a way to educate enough workers in the STEM fields to actually fill those jobs. Not 35,600 but more like 356,000.
Re: @3pdz+1qrqNsVJ No 401K deductions or match with the severance. You will get the mailed paystub a few days after the direct deposit (if you have direct deposit). Definitely stay on top of it. My first severance was a week late because of ?? some paperwork snafu that required multiple calls (but did get straightened out).
@OP+1qrqNsVJ- severance ending. May I ask you a question here on this forum ? as I get many different answers when I call HRsupport. Does the 401K and the match still occur during your severance. And ( sorry two questions) and did you receive any paycheck advices in the mail ? I haven't seen any but requested it. They overpaid me and then deducted it , I had to call.TIA
@3rfk+1qrqNsVJ
Not necessarily, they will give you a “bonus” (I.e. pay you HALF your remaining severance) if you find a job during your severance period. As I mentioned in the heading of this post and in my post, my severance is coming to an end later this month.
to @3tcd+1qrqNsVJ... anthem will not allow you to come back as a temp if your on severance.

I found this on one of the job sites. If you want back in at Elevance this temp agency maybe the way. Elevance is on a direct hiring freeze but they are hiring for a lot of the positions they did layoffs for thru this temp agencies if you want to go back maybe apply with them. Their temp contracts for anthem are usually a year long. You won’t have any benefits but…
I am fortunate enough to be married and my husband provides insurance through his employer. We will be fine financially, its just the whole situation stinks right at the holidays. I am searching all jobs at this point...but will look at contracting more closely as I do not necessarily need the benefits that W2 jobs provide. Nice advice, thank you!
Dear frustrated, I'm so sorry. It's a terrible time . Can you take advantage of government run programs! Disability, SDI. Whatever it takes. Do not be proud, you earned it with all the taxes. Just until you can find something. What are you doing for insurance? Try to hang in there til spring when companies are trying to figure it all out. Lol I hope you're applying at other insurance companies, other than Elevance and maybe consider contracting ? Trying to help you out here . Blessings
It took me about 6 months to find a job, applying every day to a total of about 60 different jobs. It aint easy.
Correction: Engineers from Tiawan (not Korea) since TSMC is a Tiawanese company.
American education system from grammer school to high school is collapsing where USA kids, even of those H1B kids that are raised in USA, can not compete with Chinese and Koreans. Just look at what is happening with Intel and TSMC in Arizona and Ohio. They can't find enough talent to fill the semiconductor chip jobs at their cutting edge factories. They have to get thousands of engineers from Korea to work at TSMC in Arizona. And these people don't mind going into the office and working overtime. This is why other foreign countries are developing faster then USA. China is even leading in quantum research.

Please be honest, how many of you really hire 50+ yr old American citizens when H1B workers in 20s and 30s are available?
This is why people need to start saving money instead of spending spending spending and Americans love to spend on things they WANT instead of things they need. Every time you spend a $1, ask yourself if you could do without it. Many keep saying their won't be a recession, and job growth is strong, but the reality is many companies have a hiring freeze and then next stage after hiring freeze is layoffs. And with AI being incorporated into products, the jobs growth will start to decrease as companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, etc. continuously automate tools and use robotics where ever possible. 2024 will be the decline of human job growth not only in USA but world wide. This will cause not only the current geopolitical issues, but enhance this growth as countries struggle for power and money. Why do you think so many people are buying gold from Costco and it's sold out within minutes? The covid funding has ended, and 30% of people default on their used car loans. Mortgage rates are coming down (around 6%) but if more people are unemployed, then even rate cuts won't help much. Just take some time and listen to financial news channels such as bloomberg . Save your money, and pay off the 20+% interest rate on credit card debt even if you have to take out your original principle from 401K to pay off the debt. And stop spending like you can afford it. Stop buying brand name items which cost too much. Stop throwing away good items that can still be used for years and help decrease pollution and plastic waste. The microplastic particles are now ending up in plasma cells which are causing many health issues since only 9% of the plastic is really being recycled and the rest is being shipped to Malaysia and other countries. I worry about our children's future. I worry about democracy being lost in USA as well. Too much tension around the world. And don't forget our kids getting dummer by the day knowing only how to play video games instead of educating themselves in math and science. 54% of USA adults have a literacy below a sixth grader. This is why foreign workers who are highly educated are brought into USA to do the math and science jobs. And this is why jobs are getting outsourced (not only because it's cheaper to do it) but because of the education level in other foreign countries. We need to get our kids to get off of TikTok and video games and get them educated. And don't think your kids are smart because they get A or B on their report card, cause foreign education in math and science is equivalent to C or D of what is being taught in USA. I may get many negative reactions from this post, but this is the reality. The mighty dollar will soon not be so mighty any longer with digital coins, BRICS, and CBDC coming into play. Even with all the sanctions put in place by USA and Europe to slow down China, they are still leading in AI and shocked the world when they were able to produce a 5G equivalent phone with Apple's iPhone 15 but using a 7nm semiconductor chip. If China can do this in a small amount of time, just imagine what will happen when they are able to create their own 5nm or 3nm semiconductor chips or even quantum chips. Then the world will not be able to compete cause they have the largest amount of rare earth materials as well. I can go on and on, but save your money and educate your kids, and understand the issues around the world.
Yes, per the RIF, you’re required to file for UE. My state maxes out at $199 a week after taxes. That will literally cover my grocery bill!
Getting laid off in the 4th quarter is really tough. Hiring really slows down. Now we are into the new Year it should pick up Do your best to stay positive (easier said than done, I know). Are you eligible for unemployment?
