Thread regarding USAA layoffs

RTO/Layoff notice coming for remote?

Rumor going around, is that come March/April time frame, they’ll be giving notices to a percentage of remote employees to either move closer to an office location, or get a 60 days layoff notice. That is the talk around the Tampa offices this week as we began our 4 days.

The strategic end state of doing that in unison with many other large employers is a return to a world where most people's employment is tied to geographic location, removing significant bargaining leverage from the employees by cutting their employment options by a couple orders of magnitude and increasing the expected cost of changing employers.

The puppermasters don't want the analysts getting too uppity. And they especially don't want them using comfy white collar salaries to build lives out in the country that are less dependent on centrally controlled infrastructure.

It's a rumor because you make it a rumor by posting it here. It might happen, but what is the strategic end state of doing that? There isn't one, which makes me dismiss any 'rumors' as just the same paranoid rantings of a pi---d off employees.

Your ED is a true leader. They'll backfill him with some wannabe who is there to fill as a spite-hire. Their subordinates will look at the new person as a substitute teacher.

@5uuf+1qrWprTX Well shoot, that stinks- especially if you like that person. I think that will eventually happen throughout this year with people at certain levels.

In my team meeting today, my ED (who is remote in Milwaukee) announced he is leaving the company and provided his 2 weeks notice this morning. As he told us, the reason was being asked to travel to an office for 10 days a month starting March, on his dime.

As remote employee, I don’t spend money on gas, vehicle wear and tear, save on vehicle insurance, and avoid expensive lunches.

Overall, I save at least $1k per month ($12k/year). As compared to my peers at the same level, I take home more money. So yeah, I love being remote!

Actually, that's the same rumor at this time last year, and here I am, still fully remote. Many of my team mates are as well, so I can't imagine if they force us all back. But when that actually happens, I will have no other choice but to quit as I can't uproot my family and move. Life will go on for all of us, some of us will just be less fortunate. USAA is not the only company to work with, but I must say, I love it here.

Actually there is, not only on this site, but talk going around the San Antonio home office.
Looks like you wanted attention, so there you go, you got it.

I’m almost certain you can. I was in the San Antonio office, my husband’s job moved him to Tampa back in April 2022, I stayed back until the school year finished and moved to Tampa that July, there was no issue with my manager in moving to another office.

Back in November, my ED told us that she was going to be moving from Indianapolis, IN to the Colorado office in February.

I don’t know how they’d go about choosing which remote employees to eliminate, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they slowly start weeding them out. I am 100% remote and already feeling like we are missing out on side conversations that are happening in the office.

Rumors about forcing remote to come into an office have been going for close to a year, or more. I would kinda doubt it at this point actually happening, but it could be part of a forced attrition plan to thin the herd. Guess only time will tell.
