Thread regarding ViaSat Inc. layoffs

In all seriousness, what could have Guru done?

He joined Viasat in June 2023 one month before the F1 failure. F1 fails. The company can't execute it's growth plan and is constrained by debt. That wasn't his doing. He was hired to integrate inmarsat and play offense but immediately company went to defensive posture. What was he to do? Borrow even more and develop LEO? Nope, impossible. MD should have done the 4 years ago.

And also, you would think after the Viasat-2 antena issue the engineers and manufactures would have gotten this one right. Not do even worse. For goodness sake the satellite was in testing for years.

I bet he leaves out of Palomar if he's on a biz jet. Time and date of departure could probably be used to figure it out.

Nowadays bizjets are like an air taxi service. Most of the time you don't know which jet you'll get.

If there’s a bizjet involved, what’s the tail number? It’s not uncommon for CEOs to fly bizjets to save time (time is money). As for hotel requests, this is all lies. Or show the receipts.

Agree with you. He should maybe also stop flying biz jets and having outrageous hotel demands when folks are losing their jobs on cost grounds (despite flying coach and eating at mcD’s all these years)

@3nwj+1v9UUtCm - yes…that is a good analysis but Guru does need to be more savvy on the optics of his remuneration in the current climate, not to mention all the “Hi team” and selfie bs which does nothing to help his cause. He has clearly no idea on defining a medium-term technical strategy that pivots the company away from the current path of terminal decline…which must be frustrating for the rest of the L1 collective who are not part of the ‘MD frat house’. Depressing.

What new markets is he supposed to create with a bunch of 7-15 year old satellites in service and customers not fully convinced yet if the two remaining "golden birds" will even come online successfully? All while being saddled with debt and little room to maneuver? The current situation is almost entirely MD and other Management doing prior to Guru's arrival 1-2 months before F1 failed. Seems like they are at least working now towards getting hybrid orbit services in place. That wasn't happening when MD scoffed at anything LEO pre-Guru.

Believe me I'm no Guru fan, and we all need a punching bag, but their situation isn't his fault. Even his hiring isn't his fault. Those same execs thought it would be a great idea to give this guy $20 million. Why? Is he pushing d2d in India? Is that worth $20 mil? I don't think so.

Look the trope "what could he have done" is the foundation of his career and is the exact pathway for how people fail up. Zynga, Yahoo, AOL, Oath, Verizon Media all of them "what could he have done" and so here we are with a clown who's not really accomplished much or created markets but he's made a profitable career on "what could he have done". All he is is a manager, not a visionary nor a leader nor a market maker. That's who we've got.

Given the recent failure, he could have pushed for more conservatism in Viasat-2. Scale down the risk a little.

The continual ‘LEO is no threat’ dogma and tedious harping on about capacity optimisation is Dankberg rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. The year-on-year stock decline, technical folly in the form of VS3, eye-watering debt and RIFs speak volumes to his failure to pivot in the face of disruptive innovation. He should do the right thing and go…fast

So now we're sympathizing for gooroo as a victim of circumstances out of his control? That's effd up

Gooroo could do the decent thing and hand that $20M back. That would save maybe 150 of the layoffs happening this week. Just sayin

Over $17 million of that $20 million comp came in the form of Stock so his comp value is dwindling quickly.
