Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Is it really worth the effort?

It is not at all easy to get a promotion here, everyone knows that. However, I am interested in those who managed to get promoted - was it worth it or were you disappointed that you put in a lot of effort and the promotion brought you nothing except more responsibilities?

Not it’s not. Chevron is the only godda-n company that makes you do godda-n paperwork for your own godda-n promotion. It’s bullsh-t.

Most of the people who get promoted are the kind of employee who fail upwards. There are so many useless people at Chevron who do little to no work and what little they do is poorly executed. I only ever got promoted because my CO was above 120%. They had to do it to get my CO back to 95%.

@2xrw

Only if you don’t spend it on Teslas and F250’s and ex wife’s and other excessive items

Those extra and early promotions add up and make a huge net worth difference by the time you're ready to retire. Think factors of 2, 3, 4 times.

You get a promo when they give you one. Not before, you may be a little behind or a little early depending on who your boss is but you do not control it so stop thinking that way. If you’re way way way way behind it’s time for you to leave or they will eventually make you leave. You can also get over promoted by a boss who likes you and then get one who didn’t get your memo that you’re in the club and you will be shown the door too. Just an fyi.

Back in the day, technical applicabilities, knowledge and experience of your role and career ladder/function mattered. Nowadays, the only things that matter are if you check the right box and metric, you are able to spin and articulate the right buzzword of the day/year, and able to not give your manager/supervisor a hard time.

Promotions per se amount to very little change in responsibilities. They're more about entering a higher pay scale and the vanity of title. Only two make a difference: 1) getting that psg 25 to 26 boost, lots of "hidden" perks kick in then; 2) getting a promotion into management, which means you've entered the Chevron country club. Below 25, focusing on your skills and experience will naturally advance you through the psgs, and more importantly will make you "promotable" to other companies. Focusing on getting promoted is counterproductive.

Promo is a long term 20% pay increase. Generally if CL then no more responsibility.

Up to you if its worth it. Many dual income families couldnt care.
