Value centers - where ?

In the townhall it was mentioned more use of value centers. Greater use of existing centres in Manila and BA but sounded like there might be new ones set up too. Are we just talking about India here ? Wonder if anyone has the scoop

Chevron is definitely behind the trend on this. Had they picked India for their IT services instead of other locations I bet they would have had this done way back. There are goods and bad of this change. Someone wants to just see cost being saved. I hope these is enough importance given to safety making decisions what Jobs move to This center

Sounds like this India center will make all functions in CTC redundant, not just IT. Is that correct? What’s the execution plan? Progressive transformation over 5-10 years or faster?

Not sure about the reason but there are relatively very few Indians in tech in Chevron as compared to its peers and as compared to IT industry in general.

I wish I would have known when choosing to go into oil and gas that it's a worthless dead end engineering job that will end up in India, manilla, or anywhere else in the world (regardless of how hard I work or skills I master)

Chevron's issue is that we don't have good managers who know how to manage delivery from MSP or global centers (Manila and BA). If Chevron want to open another center they any need to hire good Managers and make them accountability. Every year I hear that we are over budget but still no action on Managers.

Hmm, I don't know that it is racism, many just have very poor experience with output from India. Unfortunately the quality of output (or outcomes) is not something that can be easily measured for IT, which is really the root of all corporate IT issues, and why so many people end up doing useless activities.

Cost on the other hand is easily measured, and it's pretty rare to do a honest lookback about how much outsourcing or offshoring really saved, the consultants and management that did it have moved on to better things.

Shell spend much more than Chevron on staff, they have a pretty massive Indian tech center, so also many more employees. Is Shell doing better than us? I guess we would need to hire McKinsey to tell us.

Most of the large engineering design companies have made this transition for years. It always looks great on paper but there are problems. The first one is the time lag. If you think decisions and responses are slow now, it will be worse. The next issue is language. Yes the people can speak English but you need to speak to them as if they were children. Your intent isn't good enough. Next, the work quality can be suspect. They want to do a good job but the thoroughness and checking will be an issue. You may find that you need to provide a final fine tooth comb approach or the small details will slip by. After a time, management will get enough complaints and will react by having expats at these "centers". And you guess it. The people they send will be HiPots, friends of the family and their favorites to work in a plush existence overseas. Having someone with any knowledge or going there to help increase efficiency is secondary.

Yep anyone who has been complaining about IT and wanting layoffs you might get your wish and will have to deal with Punjeet in India. Those in IT have been dealing with that and it's awful. Get ready you guys will love it.

It makes sense to do some things in India. We have a massive and possibly Titanic like SAP conversion project going on, it may help to use India to try and avoid the worst of that project and very expensive SAP consultants, build some in house expertise.
