I can tell you that most of the time they already know who they want to hire, they only post the job to meet the legal requirements, no one will say it but when you see the people getting the positions and realize they are not qualified for the position you can see what is going on.

I can confirm that employees from most claims areas that are applying for other internal positions are being moved forward in the hiring process for the roles they apply. I assist with hiring in 3 different departments and we are instructed to fast track applications from claims employees.

Crazy talk on this post. Claims people are not considered for other positions because they are claims and have bad attitudes? Come on Man!! That's a bunch of malarky.

@2fcd That is due to it is a company wide notion that claims employees are damaged goods that come with a lot of mental baggage and bad attitudes. I know this is an unfair perception and I do not believe by it myself but that is the case.

Also many have burnt bridges within departments to move to claims as it was thought for a while that it was the place to be and many end up regretting it. Especially nowadays.

I've been told from a manager that claims employees are hardly considered for non–claims role, for whatever reason, I don't know. Either the HR or hiring department doesn't fully understand what we do in our work and how it relates to their department, or maybe they are told to just not hire claims employees. But I've applied to about 20 positions outside of claims over the past 2–3 years and never moved up in the process.

Now I'm looking outside Allstate.

Based on the attitude of many of the claims folks that part here, I wouldn't want them moving into my area, don't need them toxifying more groups.

Allstate policy is that your manager is not told if you apply for another role. You can share with your manager but you don’t have to. To get past screening, you’ll need to have a resume that shows you have a majority of the skills needed (not all, but most) for the new role. Best advice: look carefully at the job description and tailor your resume for the job you want. Many people have 3–5 versions of their resume. If making a career change, be sure to emphasize skills learned in volunteer work too.

Are you serious about not being allowed to post for other positions? I wanted to apply because I work in claims and I am so sick of it and we are essentially picking up the slack for other departments. I mean I understand that auto damage is short handed and feeling the pressure too but we are being told things like, "Well the qfc estimates are now taking 5 to 7 days to process so set that expectation for the customer." "Total loss is short staffed so they are taking 5 days instead of 2 so let them know that." But fnol doesn't tell people this when the claims are open so we have to cover their rear ends. I wanted to change into either arbitration or ghrn admin but my leader was like, "Oh it's tough all over you should just stay here." but now I see why. I do however refuse to work hybrid and I am filling out the appeal form to be full time virtual and if it won't be honored I am leaving for a company that will let me work full time virtual.

The Fair Labor Standard Act which is anything but fair says that a company can work you like a slave (no overtime) so the company can show a profit for their shareholders if you are an Executive , Administrator, or have professional job duties??? ( vauge to say the least) and make at least 35,568.00 Up until 2020 this was only 23660.00. This law was passed and signed into law in the 1970’s to help the profits of American companies. Guess who was President then. Hint he was impeached. Maybe this antiquated law can be reversed. Companies are obviously taking advantage of the law. Contact your congressman unless he or she is in the party that passed this unfair labor act since it won’t do you any good if your congressman is for it. Whining on this site is not going to help. It is human nature to take advantage of people because we have all been born as sinners. If the other insurance companies are doing this Allstate has to do it to keep up with them. The problem is the freakin law. There should be no minimum wage where overtime can’t be paid. Get your work life balance back. Get on LinkedIn and scream this out until our government changes this. You need to be with your family, get exercise, enjoy a hobby. I feel your pain. I was an Allstate employee in claims.

I am in claims, and the workload right now is overwhelming. People are being denied the ability to post for different teams, even within claims, because of the current staffing situation. In a perfect world, well qualified people would be allowed to apply and be considered for a different position, or maybe the position they held before the re–organization.

Kudos OP. I personally love my job in RMBC. Reasonable goals and metrics, great work/life balance, awesome managers and leadership, 40 hours a week, and work from home. Also I feel very fair and suitable compensation/pay.

I do however know that claims is not nearly as desirable an area. And that is unfortunate and should not be that way. However if most of you put half the effort into looking into and applying for more appealing and suitable position within Allstate as you do constantly whining and crying about it on these boards you would likely be in a better place in the company by now. The claims folks on this board sadly put into realization the long standing stereotype that claims employees being overly entitled, think they are more important than they area, expecting everything handed to them, infantile little crybabies. Pick yourselves up out of your bastion if self pity and make some effort to put yourselves into a better situation.

That’s nice, the last time I applied for an internal position I was told at the start of the interview it was a “courtesy” because they had already found a more qualified external applicant.

Thanks.

Great post. People work in one area and categorize every department. It seems the consensus is claims is the bad area on this site. Other areas are not exempt or that stressful like rmbc, ccc, and asic so there is work life balance and you only work 40 hours a week. It's fine if you say claims is awful but lots of people like their jobs in other areas

I am always confused by people who post on this site about how there are good areas to work within the company. Then they go on to never mention any, including the one they work in that is so great. Since you are already in that role, what harm is there in telling us what area of which you speak? It's not like we can get you kicked out of it by applying. How about stop with the vagaries and tell us your role so we can look into it? Mentioning there are better roles, then not telling us which ones, is like telling us we should put a blindfold on, and then throw a dart at a map.

Lol, just lol, a colleague tried that and they won’t let him take another job because they are so short staffed in my department. I applied to other jobs and was instantly rejected without so much as an interview. Nice try HR.
