Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Just venting here

With layoffs coming, offshoring trends, and competent hard workers these days being significantly less valued than sleazy bullsh-tters, what’s the point? I’m working towards nothing really, so why put in any extra effort? Why bother? I’m mid-career, and the only thing I can hope for is that there are some companies left which actually need people who are good at what they do and want to keep them because they care about results beyond payouts to the top and shareholders. Naive hope, I know.

@2rhg. Employees like you are the reason we are in this situation. That’s why layoffs are warranted. Way too many employees doing nothing to add value.

Work ethic is very important. Unfortunately, a common definition of work ethic involves sacrificing quality of life to pump out as much work as possible. These maniacs overshadow other individuals that still produce high quality work but in lesser quantities. If you want to maximize happiness do not include the following in your definition of work ethic:

  1. Working over 40 hours a week
  2. Coming into work on days off
  3. Having a work phone
  4. Working when not in the office. This includes checking emails.
  5. Not using vacation
  6. Not using sick days when you do not feel well. Also, not working from home when you take a sick day lol Don't be an id--t. Working from home while being sick will not help you heal. Work stress might be the main reason you got sick in the first place.

If you are a victim of items on this list you have issues. You are trying to get approval from the wrong people while neglecting the ones who love you.

Why are you trying to get approval from these strangers?
If you seriously think about this questions and write detailed answers you will get to know yourself better. What you find from this exercise could be scary and sad. Don't say I did not warn you.

Guess I come from a strange upbringing where work ethic is a thing. Doesn't matter that you may not have a job in a few months your being paid for the value and work you provide while your still employed. As frustrating as circumstances are, the company is paying for the skills you sold to them in your interview to get the job.

There is no point. Doing the very least to keep your job while focusing on life outside of work will bring you the most happiness. It is the wisest decision you will ever make. Set yourself free.

control what u can control… in IT, only folks who is safe is the new CIO… aside from that everyone is fair game -

our Performance review at CVX is a game and not shareholder focused - hope he brings external gurus to really evaluate each one vs. our old school “connections” - tons of IT are coordinators and cannot code and deliver or truly help deliver working software - many don't want to train themselves on new technology like Ansible. I hopeful they focus on keeping folks who can truly deliver - lots of new grads in IT complain how tons of experienced hires are not delivering value while still getting paid a lot

Other have said it but make sure the work you are doing adds value to the right people. Do not necessarily go above and beyond for low value work. That's the whole point of all this. You're as useful as the people around you think you are. Also know that yes CVX is happy to pay less for less quality work in some areas. Just keep your sanity and keep the relationship mutually beneficial.

It’s just a job, not a career. Enjoy the pay and benefits and don’t forget to live outside of work.

I came from a company who constantly had layoffs, started here 21 years ago in Downstream and the same thing but gentler with a lot of notice, too much in my opinion. Pros and cons to both approaches. They get a body that does good work and I get a decent paycheck, we're just a commodity, don't forget that.

I know it’s hard keeping up with the charade while we wait for the next update. Try to use this time to update resume and research companies who require the skill sets you have at Chevron. Try to identify where you would like to work and casually start applying. There are companies who appreciate people who work and see through the BS. Doing something will make you feel better.
