Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

This happens at all companies in the industry

Nobody is safe. No matter how hard you work. The key is to understanding that this happens at ALL companies in the industry. So, you take in a good paycheck, save some for a rainy day and always be on the lookout for better opportunities elsewhere. Sometimes the poorer performers get let go. Sometimes the higher cost employees get let go and unfortunately it most often is the higher cost employees that were the better performers.

Don't try to rationalize anything. If you work in the industry, your number will eventually be called regardless of your performance. It is sad but just the way it works

Perfectly said, @1mhg+19N09q1E.

Need to reduce executive and ELT cost. Maybe hire people from a lower cost country to do that work remotely. Pass the reduced cost benefits down to the workers in the trenches.

Manager’s will definitely get rid of a high performer. Layoffs having nothing to do with performance. They are mainly based on years of service and salary . I have seen people have above average/ exceptional reviews, and then one day they are told they no longer employed at COP. A top performer generally makes more money, and that’s the driver for layoffs. Everyone is replaceable . I have been with COP/P66 for over thirty years and I have seen a lot of high performers walked out.
Don’t think kissing up to your boss is going to keep you around. HR and the leadership teams decide who leaves.

Hey D&C Superintendent. Thank you you for your service and historical perspective. Today, supervisors will eliminate a top performer if that means eliminating a threat. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Retired after 35+ years service. The majority of you truly "do not" understand working for an industry that's always been cyclical depending on world economics. I started out as a D&C tech/clerk, literally putting forms into a "non-electric" typewriter" and typing in the info.
Anybody here understand a carriage return? I learned to do my clerical job perfectly and kept asking my boss for more to do because I wanted to put in a full day of work. When he gave me more to do, I learned to do those job even though I had to start working overtime. I NEVER went to him asking for more pay. I did what was asked and he noticed my work ethic ergo more responsibility and pay. Low level Tech to D&C field superintendent. It wasn't easy through the years, but If you don't know how show/prove your value to the company you work for, you're just another employee who probably thought you could make it through work and life only performing enough to get a "participation award".
Don't b–ch about how your supervisor treats you. That's on you, if you think a supervisor wants to get rid of a top performer, you are full of c-ap and think way too much of yourself.

Not true that all companies in the industry do this. Only the big companies do this. The reason. The are bloated and full of self importance. If they actually staffed for what the business can do, and not for what they hope it could do. And allowed the areas to manage themselves. Instead of a heavy hand from Houston. Less layoffs would actually happen.

Absolutely. I can’t believe all the complaints about the “moral”.

I love this post! Full of truth! I am an individual contributor, years away from a supervisor or manager opportunity.

I wan to say Complaining about what happens at COP is complaining about the industry. Which pay us really well.
And yes! It Is going through a transformation that takes years, maybe decades.

When we complain about the moral, we are complaining about ourself and how we manage stress.
It should not be a managers’ job to keep us happy everyday. That is our own job.
We are not kids and managers are not our parents.

People ask ELT to retire. If I was a manager that is still mentally and physically active and healthy, I wouldn’t retire either. Would you?
