Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Strikes are happening across District 3

The company decided they would rather litigate than negotiate in good faith so, an Unfair Labor Practice was filed by the union against the company. This was after 2 months of trying to bargain, prior to contract expiration on August 3rd. The company has been hostile and repeatedly only offered regressive proposals, no improvements. How quickly they forget that many union techs risked their own and their families lives during the pandemic while management sheltered at home. They kept the company, network and customers going during those 2-3 years of stressful and deadly times because they were essential. They maintained, upgraded and installed hundreds of thousands of new lines which allowed the public to be at home and be able to do online schooling, video health calls, zoom/teams calls, work from home, ordering necessary supplies, groceries and medicines, etc.. Now that that time has passed, there is no gratitude or respect for those who kept the company solvent, as the CEO Stankey says, “Human Capital”

I don’t remember at the first of this year when, large bonuses and raises were handed out to management, any of them saying, money was an issue. Billions of net profit, quarterly and the c-suite are constantly going to events around the country and the world. They use corporate assets like jets, pilots, chauffeur’s, chefs, security, vehicle rentals, lodging, etc.. they could reduce their excesses and use commercial like, many other company officers. They have a Dallas Cowboys suite, go to Pebble Beach golf tournament, Master’s golf tournament and rent houses that cost $20k or more to rent for the week, went to Paris and the Olympics, etc…

Now when bargained is asking for a fair agreement with wage increases to keep up with inflation and minor work rule improvements to improve their work/life balance, it’s a NO! The company instead, wants to stop any pension payments which is only 1%@yr. that were grandfathered. lower 401k match, raise healthcare premiums and out of pocket expenses to $7k before the company pays a thin dime. Unlimited over-time, no work improvements, no wage increases also, want to lower the current wage scales. Unrealistic and has resulted into a strike and litigation. D3 employees are not going backwards!!

Not to point out the obvious but, how the Company treats the Contract Negotiations for District 3 will likely have a large influence on how District 6 will respond when their contract comes up next Mar / April.

Should be a good time for everyone :P

I'm super happy nothing was called for this weekend. I've got plans on the lake. My desire to stick it to management is not stronger than my desire to spend some time on the water with a beer.

Wow. I hope CWA doesn't get you to write any press releases, or do any interviews. But really, the worst I've seen union called is 'slugs,' and you come in here with that mouth and think anyone should respect you or your demands?

Don't worry about it. The Union workforce isn't need, right. Trust your "leadership" team. They would not send you to do jobs that you are ill skilled or prepared physically to do. The hours of online training changed that and now you ready to go. You got this!

Obviously Google isn't all-knowing, and maybe not every strike would make the news. But all I can find in news coverage there is:

  • local 3902, Birmingham 8/10 4am - 8/14 4am

*Where exactly are all these strikes happening friend? I know of only 2 isolated grievance strikes, one somewhere in SC and one that started over the weekend and ended yesterday morning in the Birmingham, AL area. That’s it. Nothing else.

Care to share some valid (and detailed) info with us for a chance??*

Last I saw, the one in SC was settled. The one in AL is not, and while the strike officially ended today, I don't think the person was rehired, so there has been talk of it being reinstated Friday. I am thinking I'm going to start needing some more details on that one if the company is digging in its heels on it.

“Today at 12 ct and for the rest of the week, please cease what you are doing, stand up from your desk or remain standing and hold a pen high in the air for 13 minutes.”

Dramatic much? Maybe do a Hunger Games whistle and salute also. lmao.
What if I have a desk job? Can I hold my keyboard or laptop up? I f so, I hope the accumulated lunch crumbs don’t fall on my head. Although now that I think about it, it really does need a good shaking since that toasted panini feast.

I hereby declare that we instead shake our keyboard crumbs in solidarity!!! May each crumb that falls represent those that stand against us. No crumb can stand in the way of our might. When we are finished and sit down in front of the crumbs on our desk, we shall brush them aside demonstrating the power of the panini, err, I mean the union.

“We aren’t giving away too many strategies on-line, we are trying to get the company to bargain in good faith. Up to this point, it’s only been bad faith bargaining”

Sounds exactly like the union. Every contract it’s the same, gimme, gimme, gimme.
Like a 45 year old baseball player with a batting average of 275 expecting the same contract terms as in his heyday. Not happening and why should it? You don’t negotiate terms based on your glory days. Your contract renewal is based on your value going forward.
BTW, what did you have for breakfast today? I bet the union bosses are eating pancakes and sausage, toast, coffee. Some even eating blueberry waffles with whipped butter and real maple syrup. In other words, they’re not sweating it. They know the score. Just relax and be happy with anything they sign.

Attention CWA brothers and sisters!

The pen represents the tools of advocacy, communication, and negotiation—the very essence of what CWA members do to protect and advance workers' rights. 13 represents the 13 founding locals that came together to form the CWA in 1947. It symbolizes the union's foundation, unity, and collective strength.

Today at 12 ct and for the rest of the week, please cease what you are doing, stand up from your desk or remain standing and hold a pen high in the air for 13 minutes. Do not say a word, do not acknowledge anyone. You may resume work at the 14th minute.

Stronger Together, Fighting for Fairness!

“No going backwards!”

Your union bosses that you pay your fat dues to will say otherwise. THEY will and always have reaped the benefits from these negotiations. The only reason a negotiating table exists is to shovel money under it and receive it into lined pockets. It’s 2024 and yet you still have no idea what’s on the table and what really gets discussed in those smoky, dank back rooms.

Let me end with an old transistor radio with a manual dial that is tuning in to a static laden newsflash: This blue tu-d of a company is bailing on you, me, and everything else that isn’t bolted to the floor. With the introduction of technology, 3rd party vendor products, automation and open network APIs, there is no longer a need for a bloated, union-based field services army. 80 pct. of your jobs will be 3rd party contractors and the rest will be fodder for the corporate wood chipper like all the management jobs in Wave 1 through (insert new number here).

Good luck going through the motions with the union contract negotiation charade.
Hold on to that innocence for just a while longer, but pull your head out once in a while also.

Skills you can teach someone in 90 days or less shouldn't qualify for more than about 2.5x minimum wage.

If the company and the non bargained employees were not worried about the Union workforce going on strike, they would not even talk about it.
You can tell a lot about someone by the things they complain about.

Where are these strikes and are they the 3 day strikes?

D3 here. The active one I know of is a grievance strike in Alabama for improper termination. 8/10-8/14 Supposed to end tomorrow at 4 am, but I don't think we've gotten an update if that will change. The one in SC was also a grievance strike, but it was settled.

Negotiations? This dance was planned and rehearsed months ago by the company and the union. The outcome is predetermined. Delay delay delay. Then let them eat crumbs that barely equal inflation. Take it or leave it. Take it and survive. Leave it and go home with no income for a few weeks. That will save the company millions. Then come back to work with one extra crumb. Just remember the union is in bed with the company. Just keep paying those union dues so they can help get the socialists elected!

“Sorry but if you are a union member, contact your local representatives. We aren’t giving away too many strategies on-line, we are trying to get the company to bargain in good faith. Up to this point, it’s only been bad faith bargaining by the company even, on small issues. Never seen it this difficult before, don’t know what their endgame is but we aren’t agreeing to regressive proposals. Stay tuned, more to come…”

Thanks
