Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Plenty of banks are hiring

Yes, layoffs are happening everywhere, but there are also opportunities out there. Many banks are hiring, and if you’re skilled at what you do, there’s no need to lose hope. I wouldn’t be too worried about the future. You’ll likely be able to find something new in a relatively short amount of time.

@263+1wayCzYq You are right. At Citi some managers are good and encourage their team members to get the latest technology skills and approve the tuition assistance program, however some are not supporting employees requests. Heard from many employees same issues. Some are lucky as they have good managers.

Post ID: @1rmh+1wayCzYq Tuition assistance or Reimbursement are Only in the Employee Handbook and Only used to Svcker in job applicants into Citi. Tuition Reimbursement is "available", but actually getting them is a different issue.

Many posters have asked the question "How or where can we get new skills, or Tuition assistance/reimbursement since Citi is unwilling to provide them ?". Why don't you ask yourselves this same question and see what solutions/answers you may get ??

In Citi as in most companies, Tuition assistance/reimbursement is highly dependent on who your manager is and if they're a good manager. Most employers and managers including at Citi may allow Tuition assistance/reimbursement whether or Not the courses/Program is job-related.
For example, I've seen some Citi managers approve CFA training where the CFA license is Not job-related or job-required, while other Citi managers refused to approve CFA licensing where it's job-related.

If the Manager, says "No", it's time to change jobs, plan your escape route and Exit Strategy asap.

@1bt+1wayCzYq you must be from TCS, they have this opinion about Citi FTE’s, hence they treat badly all Citi employees when work in team, on top of this you get favourable from your the convert manager from TCS. No wonder.

Post ID: @ypr+1wayCzYq You talked about complaints looked at as whining and that's why Employees have resorted to www.thelayoff.com.

Yeah, just like Citi HR https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1w3vkNp1 and Post ID: @aaos+1w1Qjzkh who does Not want $hittybank's (and No I'm Not that guy) Dirty Laundry to be aired out on www.thelayoff.com for the media, the world and Job Applicants or Svckers to know about the Dirty Laundry.

As alluded to why limit yourself to banks. I first worked in a branch in 1987. I work corporate finance for the next 30 years in mostly manufacturing and CPG. Got a role a citi to wrap my career without any intervening experience . Works the opposite way as well.

@ypr+1wayCzYq Adding to the items, be stingy on tuition assistance and tuition reimbursement.

Please enlighten us where all these positions are. Because they certainly haven't yielded me anything for a year. Most banks post fake jobs to get a pulse on the talent out there. Almost 100% of jobs posted at banks get mysteriously cancelled.

From another post:

The pendulum swings both ways, it just takes time.
There are phases to reaching both extremes, we are in one right now.

Employer side of the pendulum swing: Job marked it stale. Crack the whip, do more with less, tighten deadlines to squeeze more out of your employees. Enforce more stringent return to office. Be stingy on raises and bonuses, well except for Jane of course after all mama gotta get hers. Mention “layoff” or “managed out” phrases more often to instill fear with the undertone of “step in line or else”. Relevant training is NOT provided. You have no voice and any complaints are looked at as whining. <———-We are here now.

Employee side of the pendulum swing: Job market is HOT. Pay me more or I leave to go somewhere else for more money. Work from home is a perk to retain and attract talent.
Relevant training is offered. Managers actually start to listen and you have a voice. Emphasis on work life balance.

Eventually the pendulum will swing back the other way in our favor. Sharpen your skillset. Network outside of Citi. Save your money.Update your resume. Once the recession is over with, there’s ALWAYS a turn around months afterwards. Explosive growth and hiring across the board for all sectors. Expand your job search BEYOND the financial industry.

Those who have been trying to leave Citi know that it is brutal out there right now. So keep applying but don’t be too optimistic yet. Things will get better in the job market, but just not yet. Stay put with Citi , wait for the axe to fall, and collect your severance package.

First off, why limit yourself to just banks only. A tech person at Citi can be a tech person for another company. A friend of mine went from being a firewall admin for a hospital chain to being a firewall admin for a retail outlet and believe it or not, for more money.

While stay at financial institutions only? Why limit yourself? Were you aware that many midsize and small companies pay more than mega companies? They can’t offer the same benefits so they offset that with more money. The point being, look beyond just the financial industry.

Secondly and this rings 100% true. Yes, it may take a long time to find something else. You are, however, 100% guaranteed NEVER to find anything if you never try. So, not taking a shot because it may take too long is dooming yourself to stay at Citi until they do run you off. This means you’ll be even that much farther behind on time in finding something.

The fact that banks are having open roles does not mean you can get the job - they do that constantly. In my area there are desks which post the same job all year round because they know that people (junior ones especially) will leave anyway - but then they are very picky because there are hundreds of candidates from all over the world. So essentially a lottery unless you are head and shoulders above everyone else...

Post ID: @cmq+1wayCzYq Yes. Correct. Applying for jobs is just like dropping lottery or raffle tickets, so that you can get selected to get into the next stage of the lottery/raffle. The next and following stages are the stages of the Interview Life Cycle until hopefully there's a job offer or marriage proposal.
Job searching is also Not unlike dating..... : ( .

Everyone has either experienced being or is aware of job applicants who applied for hundreds if not thousands of jobs, with only a small percentage resulting in interviews and maybe ultimately a job offer. This excrutiatingly painful process (financially, mentally, psychologically, physically, demoralizing, etc.) can go on for months or even years.

Just being skilled really doesn't cut it in 2024. The reality of HR algorithms is that there's a good chance you won't even have an opportunity to make your own case for why you would be a good fit. For better or worse it's more about who you know; then what you know. Treat your co-workers well and when someone leaves the company that you know; keep in touch. A well placed referral trumps an MBA...
