How would that work in an ILEC territory if the ILEC abandons their copper and if they haven’t replaced with fiber or fixed wireless?
Will people in that area just be told they can’t have landlines anymore?
Some of the areas with the worst broadband in the US also have spotty or no cell service.
Is it possible an ILEC might continue using the old copper but still switch to VOIP? Would they put a box on the side of the house to convert the VOIP or would customers be forced to buy new phones (or an adapter of some sort)?

Yes regulators will allow ILEC's to abandon their copper/TDM network. There were a lot of markets that Verizon would no longer sell us T1, POTS, DSL circuits. They offer us a 2Mbps Ethernet circuit from the fios. They understand that there is no future in copper.
False, they can shutdown the tdm portion of the business. Sprint just did so a few years back. It loses the company millions every month its still live.
Sprint spun off its ILEC business as Embarq in 2006 (later bought by CenturyLink).
Sprint can change its network without the oversight the Windstream's ILEC side has.

Shutting down the TDM and moving services are not the same thing you can shut it down after moving services I dont care how long you have been in telcom you could be f....ing things up for 30 years
What the heck you think SDWAN runs on magic? It uses traditional networking underlay such as MPLS, and really it money for nothing and as the market realizes they can just spin there own SDN the market for SDN as a service or SDWAN goes away. It's not a product not a service. And it's a pretty sh!t product in both function and value compared to what the network vendors are offering the I.T market.

The ILEC and CLEC networks sit on seperate networks (It's possible they share backhaul)
We have been doing it on the CLEC side for years. There is a whole team dedicated to it, that's their primary function. It has nothing to do with the FCC or PSC's of a given state.
MPLS is a fading technology giving way to SDWAN. It doesn't require on net circuits to manage.
POTS ,T1 ,PRI can be moved to a VoIP switch if the circuits are there. There are a lot of markets that copper is going away and the ILEC won't support that. We can make those a resale circuit or tell the customers to take a hike.

Windstream will be all SD-WAN and VoIP very shortly. Other business units are not profitable and Elliot wont lose money every month so the tdm portion of the business can stay live
For the post that said MPLS is the game,,,,, WRONG do you know what a MPLS network is built on old 20 year equipment that no one can support.......its SDWAN THAT ANY GOOD IT DEPARTMENT CAN DO THEM SHELVES with out us there are 100s of firms that do it
Just to be clear they can not come in and turn down the the TDM switches witch has nothing to do with the network.The TDM switches are end points that supports POTS ,T1 ,PRI an 911 for the areas they serve ILEC and CLEC with out replace it and that is a state by state approval and the FCC it takes up to 2 years for this to happen . They are not go to invest to make this happen they will let it die with no money invested in it still make money or sell it off if they can
Having been in telecom the last 30yrs and thru this exact situation 4 times with other compaines I can say things are going to get alot uglier in the next 12-24 months. Elliot wants to get the company cash flow positive quickly and then sell. They do not stay with companies, they are vultures who pick the company clean to make every dime they can. This is what they do for a living, they destroy employees lives for profit.
Wait until Q2 result are reported in in early August. The numbers are not good we are treading down. My expectation is that Q2 results are followed up by closing put the chapter 11. Then having the vultures take over from there. At that point TT is just a figure head and there for guidance but not to make decisions. It's cheaper to keep him rather than fire him. He renewed his 5 year contract a day PRIOR to filing chapter 11, this is NOT a coincidence. He would go from a Golden to a Platinum parachute if we had to pay out the last 3 year salary + incentives.
I know in depth what the TDM Network is and the ILEC and CLEC is. Spent over 20 years supporting it before I left. It is a dying breed. VoIP is where it is at. MPLS is the game. Windstream can't support what is needed in the game today. They are minding a broken leg and hanging on. Years of management promising dreams and now, look at the circumstances. The CEO made promises he couldn't keep. My best advice in my own opinion is leave before you are forced to leave.
Do you know what the TDM network is or what it stands for.....all of the ILEC and the CLEC that supports it.....you know nothing about telcom or networks
Elliot will quickly shut down the business units that are not profitable. Central offices will be closed and the entire tdm network will be shutdown immediately.
There hasn't been good news for AT LEAST 2 years.....R.I.P. Windstream
