Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Hypothetically speaking what would happen if a remote employed moved states without updating information

if you're fully remote could you relocate to a different state without permission?

Geo differential pay has been retired. If you are remote and in a higher percentage geographical location that amount was added to your base pay according to where you lived. USAA now just added the % to your base and that’s now your full salary.

Employee handbook that we all acknowledged…..Fairly certain it says something in there about updating OS or notifying HR of a move. It can affect pay (geo differential) and licensed work if that applies to you.

There are certain employment tax(es) which employers pay based on the state the employee resides.

Does it even matter where you live if you’re fully remote and it’s in the United States?

You know they randomly log your location on your laptop/computer correct based on IP address? VPN can only go so far as VPN IP bands are also known.

FAFO if you're having to ask about this hypothetical scenario.

Hilarious that people lucky enough to have remote would throw it away. Hope you had a good reason for moving.

If remote already, I don’t know why you wouldn’t just update your address.

You can move wherever you want if you are remote in US- however you do need to let work know for one reason - salary adjustment ! They may pay a lower or higher range based on your location and that will need to be adjusted. Moving to a lower salary state ? I get it - but I think their VPN can track where you logon right ? Time zones? If u stay on that schedule doesn’t really matter . Also THIS IS WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS

I’d say the risk of putting yourself in a position of not following income tax laws is huge. If you move from a state that doesn’t have personal income tax to one that does, and you haven’t updated your address, you are putting yourself at serious risk of being canned.

If you're licensed you are required to update your address. If you're not, then you could be let go for disregarding employment policies. It is a policy that you notify your manager of a move for HR purposes. They are required to abide by the laws in the state where you live so you are required to confirm where you live.

How will you manage to handle your taxes then? You would have to update your payroll so not sure how you get around it.
